Infant in restaurants.....where to sit?

Anonymous
bumpos are absolutely not small and easily portable - doubtfl it'd fit under your stroller OP, you might want to look into one of the other options

i'm just going to say... usually if a place doesn't want strollers around, it's a sign that maybe you shouldn't bring a baby in...

I was thinking this-- unfortunately, the description you gave of the type of restaurants you'll be going to are the kind that I would not have brought my 5 month old to. Then again, maybe your baby is much calmer and quieter than mine was. Personally, I found the eating-with-baby-on-lap thing to be much less horrible than the having-to-abandon-entire-meal-because-baby-is-screaming-and-can't-be-pacified thing.

I don't know about the bumbo... where would you put it? On the table would be weird, and on a chair would probably be unstable/unsafe.

I'd bring a baby carrier like an ergo or something and just wear your kid. She's probably small enough that it's not that hard to eat over her head!

We wore the kids and were still able to eat above them (although I did drip a couple of drips of wine on my twin ). If you don't want to wear your child, then I suggest that you go to Walmart, BRU, Target or your favorite store and buy either a bouncy seat or a bucket car seat to take with you for your child to sit in. As other PPs have mentioned, you've ruled out most of the common options. I think you're going to have to just buy one of the standard options or compromise on taking turns holding the baby.

You can probably find an inexpensive (about $50-60) car seat, use it and then if don't have anyplace to leave it, donate it to the local hospital's NICU department. Many NICU's have car seat loaners that they lend out to people who don't have a car seat to take their baby home with.

I don't know why, but this has me peeing in my pants.

Totally true. If you're not good enough at eating with one hand yet, then you and DH alternate holding the baby, who, FYI, if awake, will want to be up on your shoulder to see everything; and if asleep, will want to be in your arms.

Not the OP but I wanted to point out that someone did come up with a magical item that most people hadn't heard of and provided a link to that item.

Good luck on your trip OP. We've been in your shoes and ended up borrowing a bucket seat just for restaurants. You should have seen the crazy looks we would get when we would toss it in the trunk of the car after dinner

just as an aside, at 5 months, my DS would not have been happy in his bucket seat in a restaurant for more than 20 minutes or so, unless he was asleep. So, OP, even if you get a bucket, you may end up holding your LO anyway.

Have her sit in your lap and assume you'll take half of your meal home and finish it later. My daughter is 3 and I still have to do this half the time because she rarely behaves long enough for me to eat a full meal.

Hell no to the Bumbo! That just wouldn't work at all. I agree that if the restaurant doesn't allow strollers and high chairs, and it is a small restaurant, then they (and the customers) probably wouldn't appreciate a 5 month old there. You probably wouldn't either before you had kids.

Order delivery or have one of you pick it up and bring it home. When you have a kid, you need to change your lifestyle including where you eat out on vacation. Sorry OP but that's life. Good luck!!!

Where are you going on vacation? I only ask so I can avoid running into the couple with the 5 month old in the restaurant thats inappropriate for them.

Screw the snarkies. OP I know what kind of restaurants you're talking about and we take our Inglesina portable chair. Add a folded blanket n ur DC will love it.

Some of other screw on chairs have been recalled. Check them out before you buy.

Agree, OP, except now am avoiding it based on it not being compatible with having a baby, obnoxious other diners and all.

Umm....almost ever restaurant in NYC does not allow strollers at tables because there is no space. I guess no one ever takes an infant into a restaurant in the city.....hmmm.....just because they are not allowed does not mean that infants are not welcome....

You're welcome, [hic]. This was the only time in the 14 weeks that we've had the twins that I've had a glass a wine...teach me. But it just added a dash of color to junior's outfit!
