not unless a very mature 10 year old though. Mine would have nightmares! |
| The Dear America diary series, and I second Avi- LOVED his books when I was younger. |
| E.L. Konigsberg |

My 10 year old also loves historical fiction. Books she has enjoyed include:
Sarah's Ground by Ann Rinaldi about the 19 year old caretaker of Mt. Vernon during the Civil War and how she saves it from destruction. The Fighting Ground by Avi about a young boy who sneaks off to War (written as a diary over a 24 hour period). Her teacher gave her this book. Number the Stars by Lois Lowery about a Jewish Girl hidden with a friends family during WW II The abbreviated version of the Diary of Ann Frank Good luck! |

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken
In Search of Delicious by Natalie Babbitt (more fairy tale than historical) When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr I loved Eleanor Estes books and Elizabeth Enright, which now by default could be considered “historical” fiction b/c they’re not contemporary. I loved Anne of Green Gables, LMM’s other series Emily of New Moon, as well as Caddie Woodlawn. One note about the latter if you haven’t read it, Indians are referred to as “savages.” So you may want to explain how things used to be. |
| Wow, these are great suggestions. Thanks everyone. |
I was going to recc the Wolves of Willoughy Chase series (Black Hearts in Battersea, etc.) too, although they have a whiff of fairy tale about them. Little House on the Prairie also has some outdated language about Indians. I've wondered what's the appropriate age for the Ruby in the Smoke series, with all the opium smoking, etc., but they are good books. |
| Snow Treasure - about kids in Norway who hide the town's gold on their sleds to get them away from the Nazis. I think I read it in my 4th grade class so it should be good for a 10yo. |

OP, my DD also loves to read, especially historical fiction and fantasy. A good way to find other books she might like is to look up a book she's already read and liked on Amazon and then scroll through the books listed under "Customers who bought this book also bought". Also check out the list of winners of the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_O'Dell_Award_for_Historical_Fiction
|
| OP, I just listened to the Diane Rehm show and they were discussing the novel (memoir really), A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. Your DD might enjoy that, if not now then in a year or two |

Not quite historical fiction, but why not the "Crosstime Traffic" series by Harry Turtledove?
I'd also recommend any of the Newbery Medal winners with a historical perspective, some may be more dated than others but all are certainly worth a look. |
| How about real history. My 9-yr old DS loves a series by Susan Wise Bauer called "The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child:Vol 1-4". There actually is a lot of good story telling in this series, but it is a nonfiction history of man. |
I adored this book as a child! Thank you, PP, for reminding me about it and providing the title. |
