The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken In Search of Delicious by Natalie Babbitt (more fairy tale than historical) When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr I loved Eleanor Estes books and Elizabeth Enright, which now by default could be considered “historical” fiction b/c they’re not contemporary. I loved Anne of Green Gables, LMM’s other series Emily of New Moon, as well as Caddie Woodlawn. One note about the latter if you haven’t read it, Indians are referred to as “savages.” So you may want to explain how things used to be.
I was going to recc the Wolves of Willoughy Chase series (Black Hearts in Battersea, etc.) too, although they have a whiff of fairy tale about them. Little House on the Prairie also has some outdated language about Indians. I've wondered what's the appropriate age for the Ruby in the Smoke series, with all the opium smoking, etc., but they are good books.
