Logistics for teens going to concert at The Fillmore in Silver Spring

This is really my kid's thing -- the others are just going along to accompany her. If not for DH's last minute travel requirement, this would be easy. Unfortunately my college kid is in college.

It's not a great place for teens to just be wandering around, not that it's a bad area but you don't want to invite trouble

You seriously DO NOT want your teens wandering around more than a block from the theatre. It has been a launching point for many crime sprees--better safe than sorry pick them up. Colesville Road East West HWY is a dangerous crossing at night--for anyone on foot.

Stop clucking, Henny Penny. OP, schedule a pick-up with Red Top Cab. The will pick-up in DC if you are going to VA.

Book a room at one of the nearby hotels; midweek shouldn't be pricey. Have a nap till your kids phone you and say the concert is over, then load the 5 yr old in the car and drive home

rooms show up on expedia from $67 on up...it'll be hard to book a car unless you're prepared to miss the end of the concert

Ha ha. Very funny! But you have me all wrong. I'm looking into a car service for ultra-reliability. I saw lots of recs for Red Top (which we've used tons) but I didn't think they'd originate in Maryland.

PP who said "it would be hard to book a car unless you're prepared to miss the end of the concert" I don't know what you mean.

I still can't get figure out what time the concert ends so I'm prepared to pay a waiting fee if we go the car/cab route.

I hadn't thought about a hotel room but I did think about an evening out with the 5 (almost 6) year old, dinner, movie, sleeping bag in the back of the car for him, book for me. It wouldn't win me mother of the year, but it could be doable.

And they'd need to get there early to ensure a good standing spot? And the headliner probably doesn't get on stage until 2-2:30 hours after the concert begins. I'm having trouble even picturing this in my head. Anyone with helpful experience/advice? If not, I might spin off to the teen forum. Thanks.

Its a very small venue. I wouldn't be overly concerned, but if you are, I might encourage them to go upstairs for a great view. Also a bit calmer up there.

I'm the 'waiting' poster...I never really thought about the option to pay a waiting fee....do you tell the driver they'll be out sometime between 1130 and 230am? wonder how much they charge per hour....

There must be a way to better guess when the concert ends. I googled "how long is mac miller concert" and sure enough, 100% of the responses gave an answer in inches or centimeters (tee hee hee -- I didn't know penis length was still so funny to teen boys?). The stated start time of the concert is 7pm. I guess he gets on stage at 9-9:30. I don't think it would be longer than 11:30 at the latest but just guessing.

But they're all standing for 5 hours? And are beverages/snack type food available at The Fillmore?

Can your daughter text you when the headliner takes the stage? Main acts typically play for 1.5 hrs to 2 hrs.

Alos, almost every small-venue concert I've ever been to has a certain etiquette about crowding, mosh pits, etc. The concert goers typically abide by these etiquette rules or are called out on it. The heaviest security presence will be near the front of the stage. If things get out of control, they will stop the show. Security and etiquette are not as easy to come by at arena shows.

Red Top will pick up anywhere in the metro area if you are going to VA. I do it all the time.

A launching point for "crime sprees"? I've lived in Silver Spring virtually all my life --- please let me know about the crime sprees. Does a mugging equal a crime spree? Teenagers laughing too loudly?

Also, the Filmore is at Colesville and Fenton Streets, close to Colesville and Georgia. It's not anywhere near East-West Highway.

That's good to know. Maybe that's the best answer. Reserve Red Top.

To address the other posters about the time a concert ends. It is so unpredictable and there is nothing you can do about it. Bands in general are unpredictable and especially so at the smaller venues. They will usually play their full set but there is no telling whether or not they will start an hour late. It sucks! Usually the opening act just plays more sets until the headliner decides to show up.

One of my friends went to a show downtown and the headliner didn't start until after 11pm! He was pissed and only got to see about 1/2 an hour of the show because he needed to catch the last metro home.
