Did we accidently invent this Starbucks drink or do other people get this?

I hope you are slicing your own lemon. Did you ever see that 20/20 on how contaminated cut lemon from restaurants are? Shudder. Never, ever again do I use the lemon slice they serve in water.

I need to forward this to MIL immediately. Because I am concerned about her! Definitely not to torment her at the thought of the bazillion lemon wedges she has already consumed at a rate of 6/glass! Absolutely not to torment! Torment is purely incidental!

I think it's here to stay. I am a major anti-corporate lefty who actively scorns them and I still go there at least twice a week because I'm sleep-deprived and it's easy.

But the idea came straight from Italy. Have you read the history of Starbucks? Before Starbucks was *Starbucks* and before Howard Schultz ran the joint, he went to Italy looking for new ideas to bring back to the small Seattle coffee roasters. He came back thrilled with the idea of the Italian coffee cafes and the espresso drink. After lots of other stuff happened that small Seattle coffee roaster became what it is today, Starbucks. The idea of the "coffee shop" isn't so crazy, it's been around for ages all around Europe & South America. If you don't like the corporate-ness of Starbucks then support your local coffee roaster & local specialty coffee shops. There are plenty all over DC, Fairfax, & Moco.

I never said I hated coffee shops, I love them! As you say, though, there are plenty in DC, Fairfax, and Mongomery counties: not really any in PG where I live. Except for the new Busboys which serves the exact same fair trade coffee I have at home for $3 a cup. I still go there, but there is no Firehook or the like around these parts. Hopefully the one that went out of business in College Park will reopen soon.

Starbucks pumped flavors are 20 calories a pop. The white chocolate syrup is 60 calories a pump.

So if you get four pumps of flavor in a drink, you are taking in between 80 and 240 calories, just for the flavoring. That's a candy bar.

Fun!

But seriously, I loathe Starbucks coffee. I only like their speciality drinks. Their plain coffee tastes bitter and burnt to me. If I'm doing straight coffee it's either from my Keurig or I love a good cup from Dunkin' Donuts (but don't get their as often).

I heard they are introducing a light roast coffee for people like you, which is meant to rope in the rest of the population. I will probably switch, because I find their coffee too burnt as well. But I still drink it. Personally, I think they do something to their stuff that makes it addictive. I am totally serious.

Grande Redeye. (three shots of espresso in coffee.) Booyah!!!!

Sorry, but a red eye is just one shot of espresso in coffee. I hope I haven't ruined some kind of placebo effect you were experiencing from thinking you were getting an exra three shots. You could try a black eye ... that has two shots of espresso.

Not really. I'm the OP, I ask for two shots of flavor, four is way too sweet. A grande non fat chai with two pumps of flavor is between 200-230 calories, and has a lot of calcium and a bit of protein. Better than a candy bar, and more satistying as it takes a while to bring. Also getting some benefits from the chai tea.

Either way, it's figured into my daily calories. I typically get it as a midmorning or midafternoon snack to go along with fruit, and I don't get it every day. I'm at a healthy weight, eat healthy, and am active. Really, it's good to be aware of these things but most responsible adults will be okay.

Great - more ways to spend money at Starbucks! I agree with you - I think it's the experience of going in and having a drink made especially for you, they are typically very nice there and it just feels like you are treating yourself a little.

I love Starbucks' pumpkin spice chai latte! It's a bit of a treat for me - I'm normally a skinny vanilla chai girl.

I normally have skim lattes but my weakness is the eggnog lattes - half skim to cut the richness (and calories) a bit. I try to limit it to 3-4 per season, which isn't a problem because I don't go to starbucks that much anymore. But eggnog season is coming soon!

Any of you ever have real chai? So much better than store bough. I beg my Indian friends to make it when I go to their houses. Fresh ginger - mmm... Anyone have a recipie?

I go to Starbucks every day for regular coffee. I know it's overpriced, but it's my motivation for getting up and going to work. A little treat. Rarely I get a flavored drink, but that PP ruined me on the amount of calories in that stuff - thanks a lot

If you were truly concerned about strangers' dirty fingers leaving "germs" in/on your food, you would not eat in restaurants.

230 calories is a wee bit shy of a snickers bar which also has 4 grams of protein. That is a lot for a single beverage.
