The 575 basis point load on the American Funds 529 really bugs the hell out of me, but that's where we have been socking the money away.

Lately I've been thinking of just halting that (I have $40,000 in there for two kids) and switch to buying prepaid tuition when the next open enrollment period begins. Diversify.

Yeah - American Funds plans are way too expensive. 5% load is just plain greedy.

I actually went with Maryland's 529 Plan which is with T Rowe Price and is so much more cheaper and just as well managed.

In addition, I dont want my kids to go to any VA schools ( there are limited private sector jobs in VA) - much better to go to places like NYC, Chicago, Boston, LA, SF or even Dallas. So Pre-Paid was not something I considered.

I did the VEST because I want my daughter to feel free to choose an out-of-state school if she wants. I know that I felt limited in my choices (had to choose a school that offered me a scholarship, which meant not applying to several schools I really preferred) and don't want my daughter to feel similarly limited.

I'd love it if she went to UVA, but that should be her decision when the time comes, not mine.
