I do the same thing with the BBC P&P - once or twice a year I curl up with tea sandwiches and a few cosmos and watch the whooolllle thing. DH hides.
FYI - Bridget Jones Diary is another Austin knock-off, and not even subtle about it... Mark Darcy! God, I love Colin Firth. |

The Forsyte Saga.

The 1995 version is so much better than the Keira Knightly one! Mr. Darcy doesn't even really undergo his critical transformation of realizing that he had behaved in "an ungentleman-like manner" in the more recent one. But anyway...
Cranford, Downtown Abbey, the new Upstairs, Downstairs, any of the newer BBC Jane Austen movies (Persuasion is best as mentioned before) are all great. As is Lost in Austen if you are in the mood for something a little lighter. |
There should be a whole DCUM forum dedicated to Colin Firth

Yes, please! I think DH knows that I would run off with Colin Firth in a second if I could. |
| There is actually an earlier BBC version (from the 80s?) that is my favorite. |
Yes, it's dated 1980, and stars David Rintoul and Elizabeth Garvie. I saw it a few years ago, and - sorry, Colin Firth! - I like the 1980 Mr. Darcy better. The whole 1980 miniseries is better than any other version, IMHO. Also, if you like P&P and Sense and Sensibility, I think you'll also like Enchanted April and Much Ado About Nothing. |

OMG I thought I was the only one who was going to leave my husband and kids for Colin!!!

Okay, not OP, but I just added the 1980s P&P to my Netflix queue. I'm a bit skeptical though as I tend to hate the acting in BBC stuff that predates the 90s, but I do love P&P.
For anyone else that is interested, it is available for streaming... |

Colin Firth as Mr Darcy is the only man on my "no questions asked" list.
You all should read Austenland...a fun bit of chick lit about a woman who is obsessed with Firth's Mr Darcy and goes to a british retreat where you get to pretend you're in a Jane Austen novel. To answer OP's question, I thought the recent Jane Eyre was pretty good. Loved the book more, but the movie was enjoyable. |
| I second the recommendation of Enchanted April and would also suggest A Room With a View. "Uptight Brits go to Italy and discover passion" is my favorite movie genre! |
20:55 here. The 1980 version is closer to the book than any of the others. And somehow Elizabeth and Mr Darcy are exactly how I imagined them when I read the book in my teens. |
| Jeeves and Wooster is silly fun. It's a TV series, not a movie. And it's comedy, not comedy-of-manners. But it's super funny, and if you've ever watched House, it will take you at least six episode to get over the gogglement of seeing Hugh Laurie in his role. |

It wasn't a big hit but I kind of liked Becoming Jane. Not crazy about Anne Hathaway but love James McAvoy...
And I'm sorry, but the BBC version is the best ever. Forget Colin Firth (who is dreamy); Mr. Collins makes me laugh every time with his little froggy face. All of the characters are pitch perfect except I can't get behind Jane. She is supposed to be a great beauty and I just don't see it. |
| For a laugh, Cold Comfort Farm. |
