I have the perfect solution to please everyone. OP the diapers and when you remove each one from your baby, be sure to put it back in its original place on the cake. When you've used all the diapers you can give the "seasoned" cake to your sister to display forever in her home.

We took the diaper cakes apart and put the diapers in a plastic bag to avoid them gathering dust in the weeks between the shower and the birth. We used every diaper. Even if the outside got slightly dirty and/or dusty during the cake making, the diapers are tightly rolled up so there is hardly any surface area and the inside is totally protected.
