Then the school has to account for ratios in each class and sometimes has to add an extra teacher to a grade, which means they have to reassign all the kids. It sucks, but what can you do?

That's what they say officially, and I'm sure it's a minor reason, but the real reason it's done last minute is to shorten the time hyper-psycho parents have to try to appeal or circumnavigate the placement process.

No, it really is because some people register at the last minute. There was one year when the letters went out, then some people still registered after that, and then they had to redo the class assignments because a new teacher was added. So it really is better that they send out the letters last minute (although I know it sucks -- I hate waiting) but it's better overall.

I'm the mom who is moving right before school starts. I was able to register my child after we had a signed contract on the house we are purchasing, so I registered maybe 3 weeks ago? At that time, the school was saying they were hoping to get just a few more registrations so that they could hire another K teacher and lower the class sizes a little. I know another mom in the neighborhood where we are selling just moved to the area so she didn't register her son until a week or so ago. I think there are a number of reasons why they can't get final numbers until the last minute, but people moving in and out of the neighborhood in the summer is a part of it.
