My 2 cents -
1. It is a sexist comment that should offend men (because there is an assumption that they do not help to care for thier children) and women (because there is an assumption that they are expected to care for their children and that a woman may not be as good a mentor as a man because she is distracted by her role as the primary care giver to her children). 2. It is a stupid comment for the presenter to make because there are many things other than children that could be a drain on a person's after work hours. 3. I personally would make the comment, but I'd do it as tactfully as possible. 12:38's suggestion is tactful. 12:43's suggestion is not. 4. We don't know what your workplace is like, so we can not asses the risk of blow back. I think the lawyer's point is that a co-worker or supervisor can do many things in the workplace to make your life difficult without it seeming like a clear case of retaliation to someone from HR' so HR may be of little help in the future. |
Another employment lawyer here. The other attorney isn't "nuts" or "crappy"; you'd be shocked at what can tip the scales at the workplace. That said, I agree with the above-quoted PPs. |
