Private school families are at their houses on the Vineyard in August, and in Aspen over Christmas and Spring breaks.
But seriously, whether private or public (I have one in each and the calendars are pretty similar and in fact they both start the week before labor day), we tended to vacation in August because that is when they were done with camps. Now that they are in HS it is a moot point because they both have to be back 2-3 weeks before school for pre-season. There are usually spring break camps if you don't want to go on vacation then. June is actually more problematic for working parents but there are always some camps that start early enough - usually Sidwell has early sessions. |

| I agree that even my public school friends and co-workers tend to vacation in the end of August since camps are harder to find after mid-August. That said, they are available if you look hard enough...but only until the week before local publics start...and thus - the gap to fill by working families with kids in private. Good luck. |

I am so depressed about this pre-season sports thing. I was just starting to look forward to the dramatically reduced prices for beach rentals in the Carolinas since the public schools in the South go back so early. Oh well, guess I'll enjoy it for a few years until they get old enough for hard core sports.
Yes, OP, we do our summer trips around camp and school schedules. My kids have one camp they like that runs for six weeks. The other times when we are not away are filled in by our nanny. This may be different next year since we are thinking about going to a part-time nanny, although the older kid may go to sleep away campe for part of that time. We both work full-time. |
