Private & Independent Schools
| Do all private school families just vacation the last two weeks of summer? Or is one parent a Sah? |
|
Huh??
1) MANY DC families (not just private school families) vacation in August because congress is out, not much is going on in the government, and there aren't many camps. 2) High school students in private school who play sports are largely back in town getting in shape for pre-season, which starts next week. |
| I specified private because many of them do not start until Sept 6. Just wondering what most families do since camps end this week. |
|
Camps don't "end" this week, not all of them.
But it the remaining camps aren't of interest, then yes, lots of families go on vacation (on my block at least). A lot have SAHMs. A lot have nannies. One family on my street seems to have Dad taking off work and doing a staycation. He's painting the shutters and doing landscaping and his elementary kids are in pre-season sports practices for their private school. Think that about sums it up. |
| You sound miserable pp |
Our private starts Aug 29th and our public school neighbors start Sept 6. Are you just now wondering who will watch your kids for the next 2+ weeks? Huh, that must be a small detail. |
|
Yes, we tend to vacation once camps dry up. Or we trade off taking days off work to be with the kids. We did find a camp that goes until the Friday before Mont Cty schools start but that still leaves us with time to cover. The good news is that it is less crowded and often cheaper if you travel that late in August.
Not sure why there are so many snarky replies here..this is a legitimate question for working families to figure out when moving into the private school arena for the first time. On the same subject..heads up that Winter holiday break also tends to be longer for privates and for some schools you will need to cover early June too. Not to mention that spring break doesn't line up with the county - but several privates run their own camps to help cover that week. Good luck! |
Another poster recommended enrolling her private school kids in public school during those times when private is out of session but the publics are still in session. Don't know how that worked out for her. |
| Most private school seem to run on the assumption that there is a SAH parent in the house or that parents take lots of trips. Get used to it - Just wait until spring break which usually is at a different time than the public schools. |
| Well then send your kid to public school! I am so sick of parents griping about private school schedules. You knew what you were getting into and you have a choice...just walk. If you can afford private you can probably afford a few weeks of babysitting. Sheesh. |
Agree w/pp. You are making yourself miserable wondering what someone else is getting that you're not getting. You want to hate a Sah and are looking for a reason for resentment. Jeez. |
Just walk? What are you even talking about? |
I think the poster means "walk away" from the private school |
| Wow -- lots of projection and hostility here. OP doesn't sound miserable. She sounds curious about how people handle the fact that most camps seem to end before most private schools begin. Not a bizarre question if it's a new schedule for you. |
I don't see any complaining here..just someone learning the ropes. |
