Who is the best to see at Shady Grove? Do you have to monitor at the same office?

Some folks think he lacks in bedside manner, but I think it's more his personality (a little quirky and a dark sense of humor) and I never had an issue. He's the medical director, too, which doesn't hurt in the rule breaking dept. He broke them several times for me and I was most appreciative.

Also, if you see Levy or Stillman as your primary doc, then you are likely to have them do your procedures, as they are in the Rockville office and do their own patients retrievals and transfers schedule permitting. If you go with a doc in another office, then you will be scheduled with the doctor doing procedures today (and will likely not be your own doc). Monitoring can be done in any office.

I thought all SG patients had whomever was on rotation that day for transfers and retrievals. I had Widra & thats what I understood (had another doc, Eric Something, for retrieval and lucked out with Widra for transfer). or?

do you only see ur dr at consult?
does anyone have experience with Rachana Garde

I only saw my doctor at consults and never had any interaction with him through the whole IVF process, it was awful and it didn't work, probably because no one I saw knew or cared about our situation.

If you are a patient at any office other than Rockville, then you will get the doctor on rotation for the day to do your retrieval or transfer. If you are a Rockville patient (e.g. a patient of Drs. Levy, Stillman, Chang or Sagoskin), then your doctor will do your retrieval or transfer if their schedule permits and they are in the office that day. I was a patient of Stillman's and had him for all retrievals and most transfers. The only time I didn't have him for transfer was when it occured on a weekend.

Khan did my retrieval even though he wasn't my doc. Great guy. I was really happy with how he treated me before and after. I was knocked out for the "during."

OP - what did you decide to do?

OP here. I tried for Levy, but he is not accepting new patients. I ended up making an appointment with Widra, but it's not for a while. We'll see!

i was going to try for levy, good to know its not possible. so i'm either going to go for Khan or Garde if i do switch. Garde i know of someone else that had success with her, shes just pretty far from me. nice to hear good things about khan - i'm just so hesitant because i'm used to the one on one care right now. i have one failed cycle through my RE, i really like him, but anyone i know that has done IVF has done it through shady grove and had success...am so confused as to what to do
maybe give my dr one more try before switching? i feel like you will get lost in the whole shuffle at SG with soooo many patients and always seeing different ppl

Just want to say that I NEVER felt like I just got lost in the shuffle at SG. I switched to SG after years at a smaller group where I very much got lost, very rarely saw a doc, and had no sense of continuity. Switching the SG was a huge improvement. I had an assigned nurse who knew my case well, had my doctor call to discuss events (and was lucky enough to almost always see my own doc at monitoring appts, but if not him, then another physician who could answer questions).

thank you - its a hard decision so any positive stories help!

There's a female RE at SG Rockville that I would recommend you stay away from based on my 1 limited experience having her do an IUI for me. Horrible bedside manner. I felt like I was at Jiffy Lube.

Sagoskin is my main RE. I like his way about him - nice but professional and down to business. Since I have only been doing IUIs to date and have no known big fertility problems, I haven't asked much of him and he hasn't more than I've asked back. So I've had minimal interaction with him and just trusted he knows his stuff, and also presumed I don't need any unusual protocols. Once he scheduled me for another round of Clomid after a failed cycle but then quickly switched off of that to injectibles when I had a call with him and questioned the Clomid. That didn't give me great confidence. He didn't seem to know my case that well (my nurse is very accessible and does but he makes all the calls). But, I think that is understandable given the number of patients he must have and my run-of-the-mill situation. Sometimes I wonder if I should be demanding more due to the $$ I am paying, but mostly I just think there's not much more for him to do and I need to get lucky and go through the motions. Friends of mine used a solo practitioner RE in Baltimore and I think that was an entirely different experience. He REALLY knew their cases and was on a personal mission to get each of them pregnant, and he had the flexibility to really be creative and aggressive (sometimes I wonder if the guy is going to get taken to the medical board!). Occasionally I wonder if I would have had better results with him, but the reality is that I feel much more comfortable at a big, known, reputable, high-tech place like SG and I like that it is run like a finely oiled machine (and I feel their pricing is reasonable). I feel like in terms of the science of it all, that solo RE has no way to offer what SG offers. My friends had success there though. He's an aggressive bugger.

Dr. Levy was my RE for both my IVF cycles (which were both successful). He did every procedure personally both times....saline sono, retrievals, and transfers as well as some uterine surgery before the IVF's. He's the head of the IVF program though so maybe that makes a difference. I wonder if he picks and chooses patients with interesting cases and therefore has the luxury of following a case from start to finish. I was a very difficult case mind you....I had every problem you can think of and he worked miracles for me.

do you know if you can get approved for the shared risk plan if you have failed cycles elsewhere
Anonymous
Is that OP asking about shared risk. It's "me." yes, you can. I had failed cycles at other places and a voluntary sterilization is our only issue and they did shared risk for us. Of course now with this negative we're heading into cycle #2, so I guess it's good it's paid for even though I already know it won't work.
