AnnaNdale HS study

Definitely will be a deciding vote at the school board elections in the fall. I have never voted in those elections before, if they don't take out wf, I will do my voting.

Why is Woodson allowed to remain so undercapacity?

Because Frost is so overcrowded.

School Board members that have hinted they may offer amendments include (but are not limited to) Evans, Hone, and Raney.

This blogpost mentions Hone's amendment -- and note she is not running for re-election, so her stance has nothing to do with the School Board race in November:

The letter from the former AHS principal is ridiculous and makes no sense at all.

He claims to have inherited "a school in crisis" in 2005. Since WFES students attended the school at the time, their presence apparently didn't prevent that from occurring. According to his own letter, the improvement at AHS was due to his own leadership, not the percentage of ESOL/FRL students at the school.

He also points to the fact that AHS's enrollment declined from September 2010 to June 2011 to support the argument that the school isn't really that overcrowded. Since when do high school principals suggest that dozens of dropouts over the course of a school year are a good thing?

It's also bizarre that he objects so strongly to redistricting the WFES students - the "lifeblood" of the school - to Woodson, and has nothing to say about sending the Bren Mar Park kids who want to stay at AHS to Edison.

I say let the chips fall where they may. If AHS students end up in trailers for years to come after this is over, they'll have only themselves to blame.

Wow, calling WF the "lifeblood' of the school is such an incredible insult to the result of us at AHS. Get rid of WF and focus on the REST OF US! AHS is a mess and my 10th grader hates it because there is no room to even move.

Six amendments are now posted on BoardDocs:

Proposed Amendments:

1. I move to postpone action on the Proposed Program/Attendance Area Adjustment Annandale Regional Study until the September 22, 2011, Board meeting. (Sandy Evans)

(If the motion to postpone passes, then the rest of the amendments would not be offered.)

2. I move to amend the staff recommendation for the new elementary school at the Lacey site by retaining the current Pine Spring ES attendance island assignment at all school levels (Pine Spring ES, Jackson MS, and Falls Church HS). (Patty Reed)

3. I move to amend the staff recommendation by assigning the Columbia Pines subdivision from Poe Middle School and Falls Church High School to Glasgow Middle School and Stuart High School, effective with rising 6th and 9th graders in school year 2012-2013. (Sandy Evans)

4. I move to amend the staff recommendation by retaining Barcroft Knolls, Overlook Knolls and the Dean Subdivision in the Belvedere Elementary School attendance area. (Sandy Evans)

5. I move to amend the staff recommendation by retaining the eastern portion of the Wakefield Forest Elementary School attendance area at Poe Middle School and Annandale High School. (Tina Hone/Sandy Evans)

6. I move to amend the staff recommendation by retaining the assignment of students in the Bren Mar Park “west” attendance area (those portions west of 395) at Annandale High School. (Sandy Evans)

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Finally a voice of reason. 94% of the school is not WF kids. It's like they think we can survive without them. I'm sick of it.

6:32 here - Unfortunately, I work 3 jobs and have not been able to attend the meetings and speak out against those who think the non-WF kids weigh down the school and are worthless. We are second generation immigrant working family trying to give our kid a good education that they cannot get unless AHS attendance is drastically cut.

The arrogance - and I am sorry, east WF has a few really nice streets, but the rest is just middle class america and not this upper-middle class haven people talk about.

Wow, and this guy was the principle? I am one of the WF parents who really wants to be in Woodson. Not I want out not just because Woodson is a better school, but this makes it seem like AHS is really two schools- white kids and then everyone else. Are the WF folks the only one this guy associates with? This is embarrassing - glad he retired. I hope the new person does not share this attitute. Sounds like he as a leader is not only racist or classist, but is part of the problem. Our area should never be the "lifeblood" of any school, we are just a small part of the school. There are so many other great neighborhoods in the school, and the poorer kids who need some help need more attention, not less.

Geez, he inspired me to write to the school board.

A lot of the AHS PTA leaders that Ponton knew were from Wakefield Forest. The school was their fiefdom, and they don't like the idea of starting over at Woodson and not being the resident Queen Bees there.

So they've basically rolled him (in his retirement) into supporting their position, even though he was quoted just a few months ago complaining about the over-crowding and saying the school needed relief. You have to believe that, if he'd spent more than a few minutes thinking about this, he would have realized that his letter sounds awful.

Thank you for explaning the PTA thing- that explains to me why there are some very vocal anti-Woodson parents out there talking about their investment in the school. So, this is all about their egos. Well, I hope they don't win, but I think they will. If two board members seek that amendment - surely the board will vote for it. What a shame for everyone at AHS.

Not necessarily. It's a 12-member board.

At this point, it seems pretty clear that Evans, Reed, Hone and Raney will vote in favor of the amendment to keep the WFES students at Annandale. They need three more votes for it to pass (if there is a tie, the amendment fails).

I will add that people in Mason love Sandy Evans because she really does go the extra mile to listen to them. She's the antithesis of someone like Liz Bradsher, who basically turned a deaf ear to her constituents and tried to curry favor with a very small group of supporters in the Springfield District.

However, the problem is that not all of Sandy's constituents want the same thing. If she always tries to please everyone, she'll eventually end up pleasing no one.

Agree about Sandy listening to her constituents. Contrast that with Tina Hone who listens when it supports her personal agenda.

If Sandy listens, why isn't she hearing the cry of overcrowding more than desire to stay in AHS? Did the PTA block really make that much noise?
