not remotely near bethesda

I suppose it depends where you are but it takes me max 15 mins to get to that end of Georgetown from Bethesda, it's just down Macarthur/Reservoir.

I'd suggest the various Black's places - there is one in Bethesda and one on Macarthur.

jaleo is not romantic at all and has gone way downhill since opening. the shrimp in garlic used to be to die for - now greasy and tasteless. the sangria was great - but now seems like the base wine is off.

1789 is romantic for college kids or old people reliving college days

I second this. I've also heard good things about Seasons 52.

I just went to Jackie's for the 2nd time (3 years after the first) and thought it went downhill. Service was terrible - the staff were untrained and the food was way short of exciting or even tasty.

Tavira, a Portuguese restaurant in Chevy Chase. Food is outstanding, ambiance is romantic. Excellent seafood and meat dishes. Desserts are homemade and truly memorable.

Bistro Provence on Fairmont Ave. Chef is Yannick Cam who used to own Le Paradou on the Hill. If it's a nice night, ask to be seated in the garden - very romantic. If French is not your thing, try Newton's Table on Elm St. Chef used to be at Bezu in Potomac. Not as romantic, but excellent food and nice atmosphere. If you want one of the Black's restaurants, I like Addie's. It's in a little, old house on Rockville Pike just north of Bethesda. Old Angler's is good as a back-up. Food is mediocre, but the patio is nice.

Just had dinner at Black Salt tonight. The food was exceptionally good. It is a little businessey on weeknights but more romantic on weekends.

The Wine cellar at mrs k's is nice. Kind of like a little secret hide away. Good food, e,pried out early though-at least it did a few months ago. Also has nice outdoor seating

This thread is depressing. I'm sorry I have no suggestions for you, OP.

I was thinking the same thing, although 19:51 has some good ideas. You could also try the Palena dining room (Cleveland Park).
