Puppy Mill or Legit breeder?

I think keeping a social animal like a dog alone for 12 hours a day is pretty abusive.

My sister thinks the woman was really discerning in her placement of pups, but I'm not so sure. For example, my sister and her husband are both attorneys so their dogs are home alone 12 hours a day. They don't have a daily walker, either. Also live in a townhouse, and theirs doesn't have a back yard.

No biggy . . . it is what it is. I just thought the 20 puppies thing was a little odd.

Your sister should not have dogs. What an ass she is!

I work from home and have realized that my "social animal" just sleeps all day. Rarely in the same room as I. She wakes up when she hears me in the kitchen, comes begging for people food, then goes back upstairs to sleep on our bed. I am going to assume that she does the same whether she has company during the day or not.

I think this would fall into the category of commercial breeder and is legit in VA, may not be what's best for the breed or animal welfare in general, but legit. Now if people would really think about where they get their dogs....

Oh so your dog does not need to pee or poop for 12 hours as well. BS.

Do you refuse to allow her to relieve herself for 12 hours as well?

x2. For real. Except mine (Pug) sleeps on DS's bed, not mine.

He pees on a pee-pee pad if needed.

Y'know I wonder about those who need to use a "breeder". Do they really even like dogs? What is the point? to tell people you used a breeder? WTF? It's a rhetorical question.

never buy a dog from the Amish. They have a terrible reputation for running puppy mills

I agree with 18:11. It's like a status symbol for people to get their dog from a breeder. And please don't say that you did lots of research and decided on the breed that was best for your family--whatever breed that is, you can get from a rescue by doing just a TINY bit more research.

Exactly! 25-30% of shelter dogs are Pure-Bred dogs! So, statistically, of those 20 puppies that the OP mentioned, 4-6 of them will become shelter dogs...sad. My mutt from the shelter is one of the best decisions that I ever made. If someone truly cares about animals, they wouldn't breed them in the first place.

Along with a dog you have no medical history on-this is based on getting a dog from a shelter that cost way more than a pure-bred dog would. We paid $1200 for a pure bred dog, that has nto had a single issue in 9 years, the rescue dog we had cost over $5,000 in vet bills the first 2 years.

Finally, people always come up to us and say what a great dog we have, well mannered, great build etc. They are the ones who ask where we got her, we don;t wear shirts saying look at our pure bred dog but I am very glad we have one

This is one of the most absurd comments I have read in a while. Status symbol? Yes because like the other pp said, we advertise that our dog is from a breeder? You are a moron!

Do you buy everythign generic or buy any name brand products or clothes? Why buy a more expensive car when you can get a cheap used one? What was that? exactly you want quality and something that won't turn into a money pit. Sure it feels great buying the cheaper used car, you feel you saved money etc but the day you are stranded on the side of the road I bet you wish you had the newer more reliable car

I have heard the opposite. Because of inbreeding, the pure breads have more health issues
