You get more conservative as you get older?

I had been thinking that I had gotten more liberal as I've gotten older -- in the sense that I used to vote for mostly republicans and have been voting more for democrats in recent years.....

But then I considered the fact that maybe the republicans have gotten further to the right, so I just SEEM to be more to the left?

yep. It's hard for me to assess if I am getting more liberal but I think it's just that the Rs have gone off the deep end lately and so even though I wish many Ds would be more fiscally responsible, the Rs are totally turning me off w/ idolizing folks like Palin & Bachmann who are just plain nutso. And I've gotten more dug-in on social issues as I've gotten older (on the liberal side).

The idea that current R's are more fiscally responsible than D's is a myth. Basically the R's refuse to ever raise taxes by a dollar, even if it's to pay for disaster relief, or a war, and while it's true that D's like to increase domestic spending more than R's, it's hard to be fiscally responsible if your baseline is never raising taxes at all.

Maybe most of us just mellow with age. I know I was much more ideological in my 20s. Now in my 40s, I see the gray in every issue. I hope that is a sign of wisdom.

That was not Mark Twain. That was Winston Churchill - a Conservative himself. Mark Twain was an anti-imperialist, abolitionist, pro-union, and supported the overthrow of the Czar of Russia.

I think the fail of the Bush years (you know, when we had regulatory certainty and lower taxes) probably affected a lot of the folks on this board -- most urban independents (who are usually libertarian-leaning) have broken D in the past decade.

Don't get me wrong, a few more years of this !@$$ and some folks might figure, "Hey, if we're all going to be jobless, we may as well be jobless and have balanced budgets." But then some Republican somewhere will (1) badmouth the cities, (2) declare global warming is God's plan, or (3) do something else stupid.

I have become more conservative on a few specific issues: illegal immigration and TANF (temp assistance to families with dependent children). My beef is not with immigrants or poor parents, it's with the administration of these programs (which I think is abysmal). So I'm shocked to find myself nodding with the sentiments of scary FOX commentators/Lou Dobbs sometimes on just these two topics.

Because otherwise, I'm a flaming ACLU liberal, still.

I think that used to be true when talking about true liberalism and true conservatism. But that's not what the terms mean today, unfortunately.

I no longer suffer fools gladly.

I think personally I have become more liberal as I have gotten older.

However I think that as American society becomes more liberal, each generation digs its heels in. The overall tendancy is to not want things to change too much, too fast.

Motherhood, not age, is what made me more conservative.
