You get more conservative as you get older?

I have heard this, but it is the opposite for me. I seem to be more compassionate and open minded now then I was in my 20's. Although I am still fiscally conservative and I am conservative on some hot button items. But I have loosened up considerably on most social items.

I used to be idealistic.

Now I'm pragmatic.

Depends. My mom shifted from a liberal Republican to a militant Democrat as she got older. The war in Vietnam was a real turning point for her. Maybe it depends on what is going on at the time.

I become more liberal and more accepting as I grow older personally.

Not

The Pew Forum has been tracking changes in attitudes toward gay marriage.

This is an interesting graph because it shows how each generation's opinions change over time. The key point here is that on the topic of gay marriage, each generation tends to stay the same or get somewhat more liberal as they get older. For instance, in 2001 32% of Boomers supported gay marriage. Ten years later, the number is 37%. The boomers absolutely did not get more conservative on this issue over time.

I expect that on fiscal matters, people do get more conservative over time because their personal economic interests change as they get older and wealthier. And perhaps time takes the edge off of certain idealistic beliefs. But on social issues, it appears that today's young people are unlikely to vote like their grandparents once they become old.

I've become way more liberal.

conservatism in the form of personal liberty and de-centralized government the style outlined in the Constitution is the most radical and liberal political idea implemented in history. Centralized monarchy and communism/socialism are stodgy, inefficient and doomed to fail. As you get older, you understand that a fact of human character is that if if you work harder and your money gets taken away and redistributed...you will a) hide it, b)do as little work as you can and get free stuff. Then a dictatorship must force work leading to a population that pretends to work and a government that pretends to pay with worthless money.....see former USSR, pre-capitalist China, Greece, Ireland,Spain, Portugal....and coming soon...overly socialized USA.

Q. If conservatives love liberty, why do they hate the ACLU?

A. They don't really like liberty. They like some liberties but not the principle of liberty.

I had been thinking that I had gotten more liberal as I've gotten older -- in the sense that I used to vote for mostly republicans and have been voting more for democrats in recent years.....

But then I considered the fact that maybe the republicans have gotten further to the right, so I just SEEM to be more to the left?

I do become more conservative in some ways, but not in a strictly political sense.

a 20something who is not liberal has no heart.

a 40something who is not conservative has no brain.

Mark Twain . . . you beat me to it, pp.

Maybe most of us just mellow with age. I know I was much more ideological in my 20s. Now in my 40s, I see the gray in every issue. I hope that is a sign of wisdom.
