I know some "old money" families in Chevy Chase, MD. They are extraordinarily wealthy and you would never know it until you spent some time with them. Unless you recognize the cultural markers of which there are quite a few. |
You don't have to be a third generation Washingtonian to come from old money. |
what are some of the "cultural markers"? |
There are no old money people in America
|
<snark>
well, if you have to ask, then it isn't any of your business. </snark> slightly more seriously, what do you mean my "old money"? Those whose families have been in the top 5% (or 2%) of income for three or more generations? Or those with money that predates the dot-com bubble? Or those who have not had to work for several generations? Or are you really wanting to know where members of DAR and Colonial Dames live? and just because a family hasn't been in DC for 100 or more years doesn't mean that the family isn't "old money". Remember, a whole lot of people didn't grow up here. And one of the beauties of "old money" is the freedom to pursue a passion that doesn't pay very well (like teaching, policy, or government). So the person with the 20 yr old station wagon that never wears fashionable clothes just might be "old money". And "they" choose to live in lots of different parts of the metro area. |
13:32 - ROFLMAO.
Georgetown is definitely new money and house poor. NOT a compliment. Sniff. |
Hey Einstein, Old F*ck and Old Money are NOT synonymous! Hullo? |
Look it up in the Social Register. |
You don't know very much about Green Book, Old Money in DC do you. When you meet someone who is a member of DC old money society, they don't brag as this would be considered gauche. OP there are some beautiful private estates still in DC. |
There are plenty of people in the green book who aren't old money. |
Yes, Members of Congress, Supreme Court and other high government officials. Sarah Palin would be included if she moved to DC or met. area. Just shows you social acceptability is not the criterion for being listed in The Green Book. |
Middleburg, VA |
I dunno, this area is easily impressed. Class is not limited to a register or a list. Especially from all that I have seen. |
There are no old money families in America ppl! |
the fact that old money is heralded as some sort of badge of reverence here is ridiculous- aristocracy was explicitly excluded in the framing of the American constitution. |
