This was a kid on a gang who got jumped by another gang. As long as OP's crew isn't beefin she's fine. OP, Black Cat is great. If you got Tame Impala tickets I am jealous. Most of the places the other posters named can get a little crazy at prime drinking hours. If the weather is nice, try the beer garden at 14th & T. If you can't stand waiting for tables, El Paraiso (across street from Black Cat) is a good divey salvadorean restaurant. |
Was he in gang? "FOX 5 talked to a man who . . . says he was attacked Saturday night walking home near U Street. "Right when I got off U Street I saw a crowd of about 10-15 young people. Next thing you know I was hearing words behind me; I was taken down to the ground,” the victim says. “It was late. After midnight. Late dinner. I probably shouldn't have been walking alone." The group had jumped him. They wrestled on the ground. One of the suspects took his phone. "I was just worried about getting stabbed, shot or killed." They ran away after the attack, he ran to a nearby sports bar and called police. . . ." http://www.myfoxdc.com/dpp/news/local/dc-man-shares-story-of-terrifying-attack-while-walking-home-050311#ixzz1LQTdQKL |

And your point? That one should live their life in fear? That OP shouldn't go? What? |
And your point? That one should live their life in fear? That OP shouldn't go? What? Just answering her question whether it was safe. She is a grown up and can make her own decisions. Sheesh. |
It sounds like he was jumped when he "got off U St," right? This seems like a side-street ambush to me. OP is talking about an all-main-street walk, presumably with a group. Different situation. |
I agree and U St is an urban area and one has to be careful, such as keeping an alert eye, not carrying iPhones etc where they can be seen and crossing the street to avoid groups of teenagers. It's not Bethesda, after all, but it really is quite manageable for level-headed, cautions people. |
OP here!
Thanks everyone for your thoughtful advice and great restaurant recs! We are going to have a blast. And to answer the PP.....yes my crew is beefin a lot these days but it's with each other and usually over their train set. We are seeing BombaEstereo but now I'm intrigued about Tame Impala and will have to check them out. |
I haven't had any problems on U St. - that part of the street has a lot of pedestrian traffic at night. I'd be more worried about making my metro connections in time before the metro closed on a weeknight; the last time I took green line back to a transfer point to the orange line, it took ages. You might want to budget for a cab back, just in case the show runs long or you're having too much fun to leave early enough to make your transfers. |
