What are the + numbers?
We love our LS Director. Definitely worth the salary if not more. |
| The boards of these schools need to decide whether they are getting their money's worth, of course. Assuming that they make that determination, I really can't fathom why compensation for experienced, talented educators with lots of responsibility should be considered "disgusting." I mean, how does this compensation compare to that of many partners at major law firms? And not to belittle what lawyers do, but doesn't the head of school have an equally signficant responsibility (if not more) and hopefully positive influence on the lives of students? |
| Don't forget the house and car the HOS usually gets as well. |
I was on the Board of an independent school here and that is not normally part of the deal unless it is a boarding school and the HOS lives on campus. |
I think those refer to other compensation beyond base. Judging from the numbers, some of it is definitely benefits like retirement plan match, healthcare benefits, life insurance, etc. Other schools might offer in-kind compensation like tuition payments or housing allowance. I suppose some might be bonuses. The specifics may vary by school. |
Our Head has a house and it is part of the tradition of the school. Definitely deserves it for all the hard work, endless hours, putting work in front of family. Maybe you don't realize just how much work it is to run a school? |
| Is there a huge difference between what HOS, DD receive and what teachers receive? |

God these people work hard. They travel the country and sometimes the world raising money. They field the phone call in the middle of the night when tragedy or scandal strikes. They sit with families in hospitals when a student is seriously ill. They answer millions of emails. They are at the beck and call of a board of trustees. They have to hire. They have to fire. They have to meet with lawyers when families threaten to sue. They have to oversee capital construction. They stand in soggy shoes at sporting events and soothe parents upset that their child isn't playing enough. They call and write colleges on behalf of students. They meet with neighbors who are outraged about parking/speeding in the neighborhood/the latest school dance. They are working in June, July and August.
Most independent school teachers, if they are honest, would tell you that they don't want to go into school admin because (1) they love the classroom; and (2) they'd hate the admin job. It is a really tough job and a good senior administrator is an unbelievable asset to a school. God bless 'em, they can keep the money along with the headaches! |
| St Albans/NCS are probably expempt from the requriement to post 990s as they are a part of the Cathedral. |

The headmaster at Choate was compensated $2,300,000 in 2009 - the most of any secondary school in the USA. His compensation was 4% of the school's operating budget (peer schools Head of School compensation usually is in the range .5-1.5%.

My kids are at 3 different schools in Bethesda. Each of the HOS's get the house on campus, living expenses, entertaining expenses. I don't know about the car. At one of the schools, the Upper, Middle and Lower SChool heads all live on campus for free. I don't know how they afford having their kids go to a different private (not old enough for our school, yet) unless they also get free tuition. Getting 50% tuition would still be prohibitive at $30,000 a pop/kid. So PP, you are saying that IYHO, HOS does not get housing or even a very significant contribution toward housing cost? I call BS. |
| Let's post info on all the schools we can find. |
Hear hear!! |
But of course. |
