My ex lives in Cameron Station. I don't like the area around it (Landmark - lots of traffic and parts are kind of run-down), but the development itself is really nice, with a gated community feel. there's a nice pool with friendly people, and a fitness center and a playground. The elementary school there is better than some in the area. I think it's farther than a mile to metro, but there's a shuttle to metro.

Agree with the other posters that you should try to find something around Ballston. Very walkable.
