I'm the editor of this story.

No, the purpose of the survey is to nominate schools to be included and to get parents' perspectives on what various schools do especially well and where they could improve.

I'm not sure what some of the other posters are referring to, but we've actually never done this piece before--it's definitely not one of our annual features. We do run an online directory of private schools, but that's different.

The story is not going to be a ranking of schools. We're looking for excellent schools--independent, public, religious--to profile.

The parent survey is one tool we're using to find good schools but we'll also be doing site visits, interviewing local experts, talking with consultants who help parents choose schools and college admissions officers who work in this area, and gathering data and other information from the schools. Any other suggestions are welcome.
