" DC1 was a preemie and also has respiratory complications after every cold. So this is what it is going to be like once he enters public school?! Lovely. "
PP, I just wanted to give you a bit of reassurance. DC1 for me was also a preemie (born at 3#, severe respiratory complications). His first couple of years was rough with illnesses. But, for some reason around age 3 or 4, he improved dramatically. He is now in middle ES and hasn't missed a day of school since kindergarten. I hope your DC improves as well. |
| I work in a hospital and we have teachers there working with very sick kids. it is not to serve the system, it is to try and keep the kids from falling way behind. Unless your child is very sick (fever, vomiting) then having a tutor come in is a great idea, you should see it as something that can keep your daughter from falling behind. A cold or a cough is not too sick to learn. The teachers / tutors in these programs are used to working with sick kids - they aren't going to harm her. As other posters said - have them wash their hands. Of course it is always a bit freaky to have a stranger in your house - but if your daughter is missing enough school to qualify for this, then it really is for her benefit. |
| Just sign up for their stupid program and jump through the hoops. It is unlikely anyone will ever show up and if they do, if your DC is truly too sick that day, cancel. |
Did you not read OP's post thoroughly? She doesn't think this is about her -- she's also focused on the best interests of her child. Her priority is health, which makes sense because an unhealthy child cannot learn. Try to be a little sensitive to parents whose child's life has at been at risk in the past. As the mother of a pre-term child who died, there is nothing I didn't do or wouldn't have done to avoid the possibility of sickness and infection. |
| OP, in your shoes I would feel terribly bullied. I would consider private or homeschooling. You are the parent, you know what's best. The school may have your child's best interest in mind, and I believe you should consider their point with an open mind (your child could benefit), but I too would have a problem with the heavy hand. There may be a better fit for your child. |
| I haven't read the whole post, but if your child is missing a lot of school due to illness, maybe you should consider home schooling her. It isn't just the ultra conservative religious people who do it any more. there are a lot of resources and opportunities for groups of home schooled kids to get together which covers the social aspect. Just a thought. Of course if you WOHM, that isn't possible. |

OP you sound like a fucking freak. Get a grip.
There are laws and the laws are based on certain numbers, just like if you're driving more than 10 mph over the speed limit, you're over the speed limit, and they are allowed to give you a ticket. You may feel the street is zoned for the wrong speed, or you may feel you have special reasons for speeding, but the law--hellllooo--still is in place. You may feel like a personal target if they pull you over for speeding, but--helllloooo--probably you're not being targetted, probably you're speeding and being pulled over. Get a grip. If you don't like the law, move to a state with different laws. Otherwise, understand everyone is just trying to follow the laws, which exist for the most part for a good reason but, like anything, are not perfect and do not take every circumstance into account. Maybe you need meds? |
Hummm... ok. |
| If you live in the District, don't worry, no one will ever show up. I tried to get visiting instruction for my child who is out for medical reasons. Ha ha. They don't care about my kid's education 1 fig. Never even responded to me or the letters from his doctors. Still out of school, no tutor, all is left to me. And this case does fall under a FAPE too. It's unbelievably ridiculous. In a testing year too -- you'd think they would care! |
| OP: How many times a month is your child absent from school? |
|
Let me get this straight -- you are upset bc you are being offered a teacher to visit your home -- at taxpayer expense -- to tutor you child who has been out sick a lot.
I truly don't get it. |

They are trying to keep your child from falling behind or failing. That's not a bad thing. But they will be reasonable about it.
No one is going to make your child study if she is too sick to do work. But we all know there are plenty of days when someone is feeling well enough to do things around the house for a few hours, but not yet ready to go back to school. |
And honestly, if you're this teacher, aren't you going to refer this parent (not to "tell" on anyone) in order to CYA? I mean there's nothing wrong here with any level of it. |
