Really? I would say they are the most similar schools to one another in the dc arrangements

I have always thought Landon and Prep have been stronger athletic schools as a whole compared to STA. Prep is a much larger school compared to Landon and St. Albans. Landon and STA roughly have the same upper school enrollment, while Prep has about 40 more boys in a grade than Landon and STA. Prep tends to be very competitive across the board in all sports team while Landon and Prep appear to pick and choose what sports they are elite at. All three schools are solid in football, lacrosse and hockey for sure. St. Albans is by far the best team in baseball.

Agreed. At the end of the day who really cares about sports. These kids are not bigtime athletes by a long shot regardless of school!

I'm the orginal poster and am sad to see that my question about academics has largely been ignored and the discussion has turned to sports and/or general comments based on reputation (which is somewhat important. However, I am looking for specific information/discreptions. Should I take this to mean that no one on this board has any direct relationship to the school (i.e., student, parent, family/friend student, teacher, staff, etc.) who has first hand knowledge about how classes are conducted? Once again, if you have experience with GP's program it would be really appreciated if you would share your experience. Thank you.

You asked about academics and the objective parents have told you that the academics are secondary to the athletics. Personally if I think the public high schools in Bethesda are better than GP and besides the religious component it's not a good value for $. IMHO. In most other parts of the country Catholic schools are good, in the DC region they tend to be seen as second tier partially because they can't compete with the other privates.

Here is something relating to math, a particular interest of my son, taken from the School website:
Prep offers a four year rigorous mathematics program which serves the needs of students of all abilities. The program is flexible enough to allow students from any freshman math class the opportunity to accelerate eventually into Advanced Placement Calculus classes. To view the map of course sequences, click here.

The curriculum is designed to give students a solid foundation in mathematics so that they can succeed in Calculus and college level math. In each class, students are challenged to use their critical thinking skills to solve problems by hand and to interpret these functions in practical terms. Calculators are only used in advanced classes. In addition, through the direction of a teacher, students are encouraged to make connections between mathematical concepts and to understand how functions can be models for change.

In the 2007 Advanced Placement Report to the Nation, Georgetown Prep was recognized for having an Exemplary AP Calculus AB Program. This honor was based on Prep students leading the nation in achieving a score of 3 or higher on the AP exam for medium sized private schools (300 -799 students). In 2008, all 65 Georgetown Prep students passed the AP Calculus AB exam, and all 20 Calculus BC students scored a 4 or higher on the AP exam.
With respect to your second question -- how engaging are the classes? -- I think the answer is "very". The classes are fairly small, the students are expected to help carry the discussion. There is no place to hide.

In all events, do your own research. This is a place for drive-by shootings.

Who has the better gym then? I'm not sure this helps the OP though.

Op, Which school are you considering in addition to GP?

Prep has better everything. That campus is amazing. Albeit slightly outside the beltway. _

I've been on all of schools campus' of the years and its hard to tell you who has the best.

Between Prep, Landon, Bullis and Episcopal, its hard to say. I think Maderia has the best campus in the entire area. If you really want to extend the boundary, Woodberry Forest campus is as close as you can get to a small southern college.

Note that Prep and a number of other schools in the area only offer AP Calculus AB (as opposed to BC). Calc AB is fine, but if they can't support a BC program, then either they are not attracting or training very strong math students. Heights has BC Calc, or at least used to, as do STA and Landon. You might want to check to see if they are offered every year.
