| what about garrison? |
Now you're just being silly, because that must be a joke. |

Hmmmm...I thought this entire thread was wishful thinking. In what neighborhood in the city are you envisioning that ALL the in-boundary parents would suddenly decide that they're sending their kids to the in boundary school? If the whole thing is hypothetical, then it gets back to who has the demographics to support a radical shift in one year.
Looking at actual school boundaries, I'd say that Marie Reed's demographics would shift the most. They have a huge boundary with mainly single family homes, whereas Cooke's boundaries are small with lots of high density housing. But again, we are in hypothetical land. Two years ago no one considered Cooke for their kids, and now it's seen as a valid option because a group of parents decided it was. Things change in a heartbeat. |

Can we hijack this thread and rename it, "best out-of-boundary potential for ruination?"
'Cuz i'm thinking that as JKLM students leave for the private schools in the later grades, some enterprising disadvantaged kids could really make a difference if they applied OOB. I'm leading a takeover of Key! Who's with me? Bring your pitchforks, everyone! |
Garrison also has the demographics. Sometimes I wonder if Jeff just shut this forum down if we might see more movement to neighborhood schools as the volume of the JKLM or 'burbs boosters was turned down (or off). |

stating that this forum is the reason why neighborhood people don't send their kids to the failing neighborhood school is just plain silly. |

This thread makes me laugh, as a wealthy parent by a horrible school I would have to be held at gun point (and I might) to send my child to the school in my neighborhood. There are so many parents in my neighborhood who, if they actually all sent their kids to DCPS, it would be a great school - and the school it self had millions in renovations.
However, the elementry school scares me and I worked in corrections for many years. |
| A group of educated, professional in-bounds parents (over 30 families) is/was trying to improve Francis-Stevens Learning Center (K-8) from pre-school on up, taking it year by year. It's next to impossible due, in part, to a weak principal and some serious discipline issues that the principal can't/won't address (older child lying in wait to attack little kids--older child was suspended for a few days and that's that). Parents are fleeing if they can. So it's not ONLY a question of sending your child to the closest school. Would that it were! |
| I'll say it again: Eaton and Hearst |
| Takoma Educational Center -- homes in the Takoma area are min $400K for a small bungalow and go on up to just under a million. People spend that for a home and then TEC has not been an option. But now the school will be renovated (it took a fire to do it), has neighborhood and community boosters and a good, activist principal. Plus it's an arts catalyst school so they have temporary grant money to bring in training, programs, equipment, etc. It has the right elements to be a good turnaround school. |
| I'm also really impressed with the TEC principal. She has good things going for her. |
| I live in boundary for Garrison and there are many many professional families in this neighborhood with preschool and preK children. I see them out and about every day. |
