Is it Tacky to Put an Area Rug On Top of Carpet?

I love that look. It's your place so go with what looks good to you.

Wall-to-wall carpet is the interior design faux-pas. But if that's simply what you're stuck with, it may help add some character to use some area rugs.

No. It is not tacky. Agree with the PP...wall-to-wall carpet is definitely the design faux-pas. Area rugs can help.

Indeed.

I would guess that you spilled something there or that you're covering extensive foot traffic damage.

My mom does this and I hate it - - it's a tripping hazard at her age, and it has a bubble effect where it won't lay completely flat on her carpet. She thinks it adds depth and color but I think it looks tacky.

Two completely different opinions...

I was about to post the same thing about my mother. She has thick wall to wall in the living and dining room but insists that the thick Oriental rug under the dining room table looks good. Two thick rugs on top of each other plus a dining room table on top makes the rug bubble. She rarely uses the dining room but whenever she does, she always trips over the rug underneath. Maybe if she had a thin carpet, the rug wouldn't look so bad.

Look in any decorating magazine and it is pretty common although usually it is a carpet on top of sisal. The plus of area rugs is that it helps define a space - either smaller or larger depending on the dimensions of the room. Huge rooms can benefit from using a smaller rug to define a more inviting space. Agree with those who say that the real issue is the wall to wall. I'd spend the money to get hardwood floors.
