Is it Tacky to Put an Area Rug On Top of Carpet?

Anonymous
We just bought a new house and my DH was saying that we should not put an area rug on top of the carpet in the den area because there is already carpet there and it will make it look like we are hiding something. He said its tacky. I had never heard this before. Any thoughts?

Nope, not tacky. It is done all of the time.

I agree.

Not necessarily tacky, but it definitely is a interior design faux pas. Ask any interior designer and they will tell you the same. Just because something is done all the time doesn't mean it should be.

I've always thought it looks strange, but I don't think I'd call it tacky.

Sorry, I agree with your DH.

I do it, and I am hiding something. It looks better than the huge stain and we have a runner in front of the couch so that the stains don't get worse. Just waiting to get new carpet right before we put the house on the market.

We have an amazing interior designer and he put a shag area rug on top of our Berber carpet in our family room. It looks great, though I never would have thought it would work. I disagree that it is a designer faux pas.

We put a bamboo area rug over our carpet. Saved the carpet from getting worn and it looked great.

I think it depends on the rug.

Not a designer faux pas at all - depends on the rug and the carpet.

I saw on one of those home shows that anytime you see a rug over carpet it usually indicates major stains so that's why I wouldn't do it.

Agree 100%. It just depends how you do it.

I used a designer from Kellogg collection who put a decorative area rug over a beige plush carpet in bedroom. It added a lot of color.

Not at all, it is completely fine. It looks much, MUCH better to me than wall-to-wall carpet all by its lonesome.

Yes. I agree with your husband.
