This is exactly what I think when I go to someone's house on any given day and they use air freshener. Cannot for the life of me understand why it is so popular around here.

Try steamed, knucklehead.

Why do cats always get the bad rep? Honestly dogs smell pretty gross themselves. I sat down on a friends couch recently and was enveloped by the smell of dog. Yuck.

I like the smell of raw better.

realtor here. DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING OBVIOUSLY AROMATIC. IT IS THE KISS OF DEATH FOR A HOUSE. Make everything squeaky clean and you won't have to make the house smell good. With that said, if you accidentally happen to be drying towels during the open house, that is a great aroma.

OP, the trick is natural make-up.
Like an illusionist, you need to create a wholesome atmosphere that invites all 5 senses, without actually putting out an obvious smell.

So open all the windows, clean your house without toxic chemicals (professionally if need be), and have fresh cut flowers in the living room or foyer. Dried lavender sachet in the closet. Clementines piled up in a wooden bowl (the idea of food and scent, rather than the actual smell). Drying towels is good too.

If I am looking at a house, I do not want to smell anything. I want to smell what the home smells like. If there is something "aromatic" then I will have to assume the owner is covering up a smell. I like the smell of fresh nothing. Flowers if anything. I smell for mold and smoke and pet urine. I want to be able to smell the house. Having something aromatic just raises the red flag.

A selection of ripe french cheeses.

Another realtor here. PP realtor is right, DON'T DO IT!!! As long as your house is clean, clean and clean, you'll be fine. Do not cook anything. Occasionally people want to look in the oven, I wouldn't want it on. No crock pot out. Making a fake scent is a big no-no. Good luck with your sale.

Murphy's oil soap to clean hardwood floors, Meyer's products to clean counters, wipe down surfaces.

The kitchen and bath must be sparkling, squeaky clean.

Declutter, declutter, declutter!

I'm the one who wrote about cat piss. It's worse than dog. I love dogs. I know they smell too. But nothing, nothing smells worse than cat piss!

Why are the amateurs all over this thread? Sticking their toes in the water or what? So boring.
