Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| Before school care is much faster wait, can you adjust work schedule so you an start early and leave early? That is what I'm doing if we don't get a spot. I will go into work at 7 and husband will do am drop off. Then I get off at 3:30 and meet the bus. |
What are you going to do on Mondays? |
|
OP, I was also moved donw on the waitlist as well. I was told by the SACC office that this happens when 1) someone in SACC elsewhere gets on the waitlist, 2) someone with an older sibling in SACC requiests for a younger sibling and 3) if a child under a protective court order gets put on the SACC waitlist.
But you really will not know where you really are until the summer clean up. That is when they move off outgoing sixth graders, clean up the waitlist, etc. There is also often significant movement in August when SACC sends out the first payment notification. Then people who have just been hanging out on the waitlist have to put their money down and many people give up their spots at that time. A lot of people stay on the waitlist "just in case". |
| Ok, that is helpful. FWIW, my hours are fairly unmovable and a 7-3:30 schedule would not be available or work at my current full-time job, nor my husband's. |

Check your local after school program...
I sent my son to a local Karate school since he was in Kindergarten. He is very happy there and learned Karate. The best for me is: their pickup time is relatively flexible, most time, before 6:30pm, some time, if you get there at 7:00pm, it's fine. I can't make it for 6:00pm for SACC's after school program. Besides, I pay pretty same as the SACC program. |
| so, I should have gotten a letter for next year if I called in October? Yeah, I'm screwed. |
No. I am 8:06 above. I just kept calling every few weeks to check on the status. When we cleared the waitlist I got an e-mail and maybe (?) a phone call. I did not get a letter until I actually said I wanted the spot. |
| When do they call you to confirm that you still want the spot? Should they have called by now? |
|
They don't call or contact you until you actually come off the waitlist.
You can call them anytime to check on your waitlist status. |
We're on a wait list for after school and got a letter inJanuary stating we had to call and confirm that we still want to be on the wait list. From when I'd registered to that point we'd move from 40-something to 20-something. I haven't called back to see where we are because now that we're having a third, we'll probably get a nanny. I'm just holding onto the spot until it gets closer and we secure the nanny. |

I just called to check - at least I was still in the system! Apparently, I am enrolled in the after-K program at our local school (darn half-day kindy) and #27 on the wait list for after-school (I think the Kindercare across the street is a better option). I am also on the list for the full-day K elementary on the other side of the major road from us (we might sell our house and rent there) and am #11 on THAT wait list. Of course, I'm completely screwed if we get into one of the 2 lottery schools we applied to in the past month, as you can only get on 2 lists - but if our kid gets into one of those schools, at least we know she will be in a full-day K.
The logistics of all of this make my head hurt. |
| We gave up on SACC and pay twice as much for a commercial daycare for before and after school. |
