#106 on the waitlist for after school care in FFX county (SACC)--ARGH!

Anonymous
So I signed up last summer, but my kid is 106th on the after school (4-6pm) waitlist for his base school for kindergarten, and slightly higher on a nearby school.

How long of a wait is this? At this point, i'm considering private kindergarten, which I'm so bummed about, but the SACC office told me they can't tell me if I will get off the list in 2011-2012, or the next year, and if I forfeit the spot because it comes up during this school year, I go to the bottom of the list again!!

Seriously, there has to be a better way, especially so that my kid is not on a bus all day shuttling between care centers and school!

106 is not as bad as it sounds. You may not get in for K, but it isn't out of the question. We were 80ish and got in. Check in June or so when they update the list for the new year and you may be pleasantly surprised.

It isn't bad. I think our number was 70ish at this time before Kindergarten. You will probably get a call in June or July. If not, ask the SACC teachers if there are any after school caregivers in the area.

We just received a letter from SACC wanting a positive confirmation from us that we wish to remain on the wait list for SACC. (We do.) Those that don't reply by the date given will be dumped off the list.

We got on the list for both before and after SACC in January 2009 for SY2009-2010. (I think we were in the 120s when we first got on the list, and moved down rapidly as time went on...) We got into before care in Oct. 2009, and took the slot. We got into after care in January 2010, and gave up our spot and went to the back of the line. A coworker who got on the list for both before and after in May 2009 got in for SY 2010-2011.

The list does move, and will move quite a bit by the start of next school year. And that SACC is looking to firm up the waitlist to include only people who still want to be on the waitlist should help with the numbers.

We were 96th at a McLean elementary school. It took 2.5 years.

I was #65 for wait list for K. Didn't make it close so decided to go private for K. Now I am #2 for 1st grade so looks like we are in so it took 2 years for us.

For working parents who do not get a spot in SACC, what are some other options for after school care.

Local daycares and karate places offer before/after care. Call your school.

You might still get in. Many people (including me) registered, but I don't think I'll need the spot. I work P/T and I'm still figuring out whether I want to go back to FT once K starts. Right now I'm leaning towards not, so I might not need it, but registered back in July just in case. I'm sure there are others like me out there.

We just took our name off the waitlist for AS SACC. I signed up several months ago just "in case" but the reality is we will need to keep our babysitter/nanny to care for our younger child (who we decided not to move to a full-time preschool next year).

We were in the 90s when I signed up this summer. I called today because I got the same letter as pp and we are #17! Just wanted to give you some hope OP!!!

Similar situation here last year. Initially told we were # 136 and we got a call in June that we had a spot for the fall.

OP, I am just curious - did you get on the list the first day registration opened? If so, what time during that day?

Not being able to use SACC is NOT the end of the world, either. There ARE other options - check the child care list for Fairfax and see if there are any in-home providers or centers who service your school. Some schools are kind enough to keep this information in their main office for parents in need of aftercare. I definitely think going private just because you don't get into SACC is pretty goofy.

OP here. So they just had the list clean up sent out by the SACC office so I thought I would move up. I am somehow now 107th on the waitlist. WTF?!

Look, I know there are private options, it just seems like my kid will be bused around all day. I'm just kind of in mourning here.
