how many of you still have a landline

OP here. Thank you everybody. We have hung onto our landline for the reasons others mentioned. Also glad to know I'm not the only one who likes the idea of having a family number.

We also have a landline for many of the reasons listed:

If you call 911, police/fire have address (does not happen with Cell phones)
I don't like talking on my cell for long periods of time - also reception
Security System - although we have cell phone back up on ours
Good to have a central number for children's school, etc.
Power outages - pepco knows your address by your telephone number and can auto tell you if they are aware of the outage already and estimated time that it will come back (for power outages only a true land line works - cannot be used for cordless phones, for this reason we have 1 corded phone in the house that is never used except for this).

We got ours for 911 reasons. We live on a street with a weird and long name that no one knows how to pronounce or spell. I was worried that if a babysitter or the nanny needed to call 911, they'd have a hard time giving an address. Cell phones are generally pretty good at determining location (they triangulate the signal), but I wasn't 100% comfortable with it. We keep the ringer off and never give out the number.

Before having DS, I'd been without a landline for 10 years and never missed it.

I have a landline for emergency reasons. I also worry about the kids not being able to find a cell phone, or it not being charged in case one of the adults is sick or injured. My MIL watches the kids and she refuses to use a cell, so we have a landline. I got rid of long distance, and it only costs 25$ a month. Also the kids call their friends on it all the time.

typo, 45$ a month

$20 a year, unlimited US calls

Same here and introduced six friends who left Verizon for Magic Jack.

Nope, not worth the $ imo.

As far as an alarm system, we paid a one time $100 rate to go wireless and it's only a few extra $s a month thereafter. Also more difficult for a burglar to cut the line. So even if we had a landline we wanted a wireless system.

We have a landline. My house is the black hole for cell signals. I can stand in one spot on the deck and get a few minutes before it drops the call. If I get a text or call when I am already in bed (I go to bed early), I have to get dressed and go outside to answer/respond on my cell. Lame!

Though, with my new Roku box, I'm considering canceling the TV and keeping the internet and phone. It would save me a few bucks. Does magicjack have quality sound? Does it drop calls?

I do
I am still happy with it.
I get to use my phone number for disocounts when I shop at safeway. The number belonged to someone else.
Sometimes I get calls from creditors wanting to contact xx,xxx. I am not her.
At one time we got an angry call from the neighbour of xx,xxx claiming we had been stealing their newspaper. It was real fun explaining to him that he should come to the door...

I've kept my landline. Its more reliable. I can hear it. It rings throughout the whole house and its one constant number for the whole family. But I don't use my cellphone much - well not for talking on the phone. Texting, games, maps, etc - sure. But rarely talk. So when people call me, they call my landline.

Magic jack has PERFECT sound quality and never drops calls unless your Internet is off. You should give I a try they have a 30 day free trial.

For 911 and because of 9/11

I like being able to tuck my phone between my ear and shoulder while I walk around the house doing stuff. A cell phone still doesn't feel like a real phone to me, even though I use one all the time. I guess I'm old.

We did Vonage.

We call international A LOT!!! Both our families are abroad so calling cards were getting expensive.

Also the "family number" issue.

Can you have DSL or FIOS without a landline?
