how many of you still have a landline

Anonymous
Hi. Curious to know how many of you have gone all cell phone and how you got to that point. Am thinking of doing this and wondering what others' experiences are. ARe you happy with the decision?

I have magic jack as my landline and couldn't be happier.
$20 a year, unlimited US calls

i went all cell all the time almost 10 years ago, but came back to the landline. Why?

1. they are cheaper than ever -- almost free -- if you bundle with cable and internet
2. I tend to be a tin foil hate type at times and worry about the impact of using a cell all of the time
3. like the idea of having a family number, especially as my child gets older
4. worry that in an emergency like 911, cell phone only would put me out of contact with loved ones
5. works better with my burglar alarm (while the monitoring company will let me go wireless, it's as expensive to get this service as it is to have a landline)

I hate talking to people on cell phones. Invariably one party has a less than stellar signal and I can't get through the conversation without repeating myself or asking the other person to do so.

Until we moved into a SFH a bit over a month ago, we had not had a landline in 6 years. However, we do have one here for several reasons 13:45 posted (mainly #1, #3, and #4).

We got rid of ours almost exactly five years ago. Reading PPs, I wonder if we'll return... the argument about having a "family number" as my child gets older is especially compelling...

We've kept ours for all these reasons as well.

Agree, the clarity is never as good.

We don't get good service in our house. You have to stand in one place and not move to get a signal.

we still have ours. DH doesn't have a cell and I hate talking on my cell (it's a pre-pay.)

Tell me more about magic jack, please!

Magic Jack is like this usb thing you connect to your computer. YOu need internet and to have the computer on to have the phone work. I have an imac and never turn it off and it's not a problem for us.
The first year you pay $40 ($20 is for the usb that you keep) and after that you pay $20 every year.
We've had it for 3 years now and love it! We first switched to vonage, which is a similar concept except you need a router i think and it's more expensive. Then we gave magic jack a try and never looked back. It's awesome, call quality is great, and for $20 a year... you just can't beat that!

Can you have multiple phones or can you only have one phone with it? We're in a three story row house and it would kill me to only have one landline phone!

We have a land line. In addition to not really being huge cell phone users and liking the security of having a land line just in case, my mother lives in Europe, and it would be way too expensive to call her regularly from my cell phone.

we live in a 3 story townhouse and have a phone with 4 handsets. you leave the base next to your computer and then put the other handset and bases wherever.
