You could let the bride know that you are having a tough time finding a nice suit for the little guy b/c most (nice) places have john-johns or similar for little guys. If you know the color of the bridesmaids' dresses, send her a picture of one that coordinates and ask if she thinks that would work.

My guess is that she is inexperienced with young children and not very knowledgeable about the behavior or attire of 18 month old boys. Give her a little help and you both might be happier.
