TJ & Aggressive parents

What makes your "thinking" correct?

Seriously? Did you read the post? Her child was at Kilmer last year and TJ this year. So they took the TJ test last year and all kids had to take the test twice last year. Cynical much?

All of these cynical and slightly angry posters questioning my attitude towards TJ and the application process amuse me. In keeping with my laid back attitude, I'll just shrug my shoulders and go on with the rest of the day.

And yes, I was referring to the testing screw-up last year when I said my child took the test twice. If you all actually knew something about the TJ admission process, you would know that there is no way for a child to take the TJ test twice, unless for some reason your child repeated 8th grade and was eligible to come in as a freshman two years in a row. If a child is applying as a "froshmore" you must submit PSAT or SAT scores, rather than sitting for the regular entrance exam.

Good idea. I've never met any parents with TJ kids, either the overtly pushy type or the ostensibly laid-back type, who don't find a way to bring up their TJ kids whenever possible. It's the nature of the beast.

And, looking at it from the perspective of a TJ parent, you can't win either way. If you're pushy, you're to be avoided. If you are laid-back, others will think you're implicitly touting your kids' natural brilliance.

Just go with the flow.

They circled around the TJ rep like buzzards around a carcass, and some even were asked to turn off video cameras. We're not sure if we want our daughter around these kinds of parents for 4 years, because at some level the apple can't fall far from the tree!

haven't read the whole thread but this was my thoughts exactly.

One day we will have the innate intelligence and engineering ability to build an exquisite camera. Until that day we can always manipulate derivatives on Wall Street.

Your self-report is meaningless. You clearly are not laid back. I advise a second independent opinion!

For what it's worth - I'm from Alexandria City and we can't even apply to TJ (which kills me when it is referred to as an Alexandria school). When I hear about all the competition it makes complete sense to me. Our kids world's now revolve around Alexandria, so we are staying put. But - if private was not an option, I'd do everything I could to send our kids there if they wanted to attend. Perhaps the real issue has nothing to do with the parents, but why not another school like TJ? There certainly are enough talented kids to go around.

I think you're going to find pushy parents whenever they perceive a class/environment will give their kids an edge/advantage/prestige. My kids aren't old enough to consider TJ (and we're not going to push it) but I can tell you there have been some really aggressive/obnoxious parents in the FCPS Spanish Immersion program. I can't believe some of the behavior I've seen and can only imagine how it will magnify as their child gets older. But, I've also found some really nice parents and I just gravitate towards them and ignore the others.

"Perhaps the real issue has nothing to do with the parents, but why not another school like TJ? There certainly are enough talented kids to go around."
The school system has helped create this monster by throwing both GT and TJ as the only option for high performing students. Any student will tell you there is a huge difference in the climate of a gen ed class and an honors or AP class.
This is not the students fault or the parents fault. Since there isn't "enough" to go around, people fight. Those parents who are laid back are lucky if they don't have to worry or maybe they will regret it later if they didn't know they actually should be worrying now.
We need to acknowledge that education access should be equal but students are not equal and we need more spaces for everyone.

WTF are you talking about? Worry about what? There are ample opportunities for educational challenges. I don't know why people buy into this crap.

Unfortunately, this is true. Some Koreans seem over the top. I've read stories about there educational system and how its creating a big pressure cooker that doesn't really produce the skills needed for the 21st century. True, Korea has been a master at copying/pirating intellectual property and cheap goods. Thus should a lesson that their educational system has limits and while it maybe really good at producing robot workers, doesn't do a good job at innovation/adaptive thinking.

Why take math/science classes in college? There's more babes in the business classes, the classes are easier, and you make more money after graduation.

There's no requirement to take math and science in college. Chase the bucks and the babes. Leave the geeks to inherit the earth.
