Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| Following up on a post I just put on another thread, has anyone else found a lot of the parents of kids applying this year to TJ very aggressive? They circled around the TJ rep like buzzards around a carcass, and some even were asked to turn off video cameras. We're not sure if we want our daughter around these kinds of parents for 4 years, because at some level the apple can't fall far from the tree! |

That's an interesting observation. My DS was at Kilmer last year (I think you said your daughter is there now) and at TJ now, and I know of only 1 aggressive parent. Your point about the video camera made me laugh since I was told by my son that this parent brought a video camera to the TJ presentation last year and was asked to turn it off. I, on the other hand, like most of the parents I'm friendly with, didn't even go to the presentation. It was during the school day so I assumed that it was for kids only.
I also didn't enroll my son in a test prep class (though many of his friends did), and I was hands-off throughout the process, other than to drive him to the test (twice!) and proofread his app. I haven't encountered any crazy parents at TJ so far, but again, I'm pretty laid-back myself so maybe I've just managed to avoid that atmosphere. Good luck to your child, and hopefully she'll only have to take the test once! |

I am already encountering these type of parents in 3rd grade at our GT center. They are thoroughly prepared to step on whoever they have to step on to make sure their kid is at the top and stays at the top.

Wow! What GT Center is this?

a Korean? |

Yeah, sure! The sky was red today. |

PP, it may be hard to believe from reading these foums (!) but most parents are normal and relatively hands off about these things.
We are at a center and I have not met any parents like the ones described by 21:10. Maybe they are there, but frankly I am generally too busy to care. But everyone we have encountered has been friendly and helpful. |
Nope, didn't enroll in test prep, didn't hand-hold over the app, and haven't met any crazy parents at TJ. I'm sorry you're so cynical. |
TJ test taking more than once? Private school public expense? Most students at TJ don't take classes not available at base AP schools. Unless it's a special class required for all at TJ. |
| OP - I think you are right to question whether or not to enroll your child at TJ. You seem emotional about it (given your analogies) and I think it would color your and your child's experience throughout the 4 years - i.e. if your child does not excel it is because of the other children's parents (and children) and their "tactics". |
I think the poster is referring to last year's TJ testing fiasco. Some of the test booklets had an error, so all students ended up having to re-take the TJ test. |
| What makes your "thinking" correct? Let the poster affirm. |
Sure!!! Perhaps someone else in your household performed that role. |
You proofread your son's application. I'm sure you'll swear you used a customary laid back as opposed to rigorous proofreading technique! |
