Private & Independent Schools
| Westminster school in Annandale might be worth a look. They go up to 8th grade, and quite a few graduates go to TJ. VERY structured (some say rigid) however. |
| Edmund Burke, St. Anselms, or GDS. |
Another St. Andrew's grad here and I agree that I wouldn't call it "button down" at all. I think it could be a great for someone like OP's son. When I went there, there were plenty of brainy quirky kids and they fit in just fine and their talents were celebrated. OP mentioned her son makes films...we had a very quirky brainy kid in my class who used to make hilarious animated films and would show them in the lunchroom and everyone loved it. PP, what year did you graduate? |
| I love private school, but I wouldn't send a kid like that to private...it would be better to send him to a large public school where there might be other kids like him. |

Brainy + quirky=GDS
this is particularly true as you move up through the middle school and high school. Perhaps in elementary school the quirkiness may be a bit less obvious, as most kids come in at PreK or K and at that point kids may not be as set in their pathways yet. At entry years in later lower school and for middle school and high school, there is quite a lot of self-selection for these kids choosing to apply to and come to GDS. Field and Burke are great places as well for quirky, but if your child is really likes academic challenge, particularly for middle school and high school the types of classes and tracking in math/science are going to give him a lot more options at a larger and more academically-selective school like GDS. All three have fabulous arts programs visual and performing arts. |
| I think most ... maybe all of the elite privates have that element...the type of kid you describe. Some have more than others. I agree Field/Burke are nice schools for the quirky types...they aren't at the top of the list as far as academics are concerned...not bad...but not the most competitive. |
| GDS, Burke, Field. |

| Definitely St. Anselm's when he gets to 6th grade. |
