I definitely wish we had invested in a higher quality glider. After use every night plus for 2.5 years ours has really started to wear such that I'm not sure it will make it through for kid #2. There were definitely nights I wish I had the recline function too.
I hated the lock mechanism on ours and ended up breaking it off because it just drove me crazy randomly locking up. |
same here - REALLY wished we had one... |

Echoing the PPs - love our reclining glider! It is a Dutalier and so so comfy. Our baby is not a great sleeper and when she is sick or I can't get her back into the crib to sleep, I just recline the glider and spend the rest of the night there with her. She had a cold last week and I spent most of two nights sleeping in the glider, and slept almost as well as in bed.
I do sometimes think, though, if we didn't have such a comfortable glider, maybe we would have found a way to get our daughter sleeping better by now. |

My firstborn won't give up his glider, and he's 11.
For kid #2, we got a gliding/swiveling/reclining LaZBoy, and it is fantastic. Even great sleepers get sick, and sleeping in that chair is much more comfortable than sleeping in the nonreclining glider. |
ditto. especially if it's our 1st, spend more money so it will last. Our was good at the start but now doesn't recline well and creaks a lot. so for #2 we'll prolly need a new one. sigh. |
| OP here- thank you so much for all the replys. It sounds like the reclining option is a no-brainer. Now I need to decide if I should go with a classic reclining glider or a lazy boy style. I really appreciate all the input. |
| I concur with going to LazBoy, Room&Board, etc and getting a rocker recliner. You can get a nice chair for about $600 that you'll have forever. SO much more comfy than a designated baby rocker. For #1 we had a Shermag and it was fine, but for #2 we got a real upholstered chair and the difference was HUGE. #1 could sit in the chair with me & the baby, I could sleep in the chair, more easily breastfeed (the arms are more padded and at a better height). |

I didn't even know that some recline, short of lazyboy..
Bear in mind that sleeping with your newborn on a glider is many many times more dangerous than just taking them into your bed with the safety guidelines (no heavy blankets, pillows near them, etc). The vast majority of cosleeping deaths are either couch/chair sleeping deaths with exhausted parents and babies or parents who are drunk/high. I guess I'm saying if you're going to be tempted to sleep with a new baby in one, don't buy one that reclines. An older sick baby, sure, absolutely. |
| Go with something that you feel 100% comfortable in. I spent extra $$ to be sure. I would not have bf my DS had it not been for my glider and boppy. |
|
I bought a used one that basically just glided. I loved it. HOWEVER, there were nights, mornings, and afternoons when I probably would've used a recliner function becaue I was so @#$% tired that I started to fall asleep. Falling asleep slumped over your baby hurts your back and neck.
So, yeah. If it's all the same to you, get a reclining function. I am going to!

| Our DS hated being rocked. The couch always worked fine. Given the price of reclining gliders, you might want to wait until you find out what kind of baby you have. (Unless there's a long wait to get one?) |
| yes absolutely. and another benefit of it is that you don't need a separate footstool. can't tell you how many times i fell asleep in that, reclined with baby on my chest. |
| 13:01 here... by the way, we got a Best chair from Baby2Teen. Highly rated by the Baby Bargains folks, and they had a ton of fabrics to choose from. At least they did 4.5 years ago, when we bought it. So looking forward to using it again next month when #2 arrives!!! |
| Anyone get a rocking recliner (not wooden one, one that looks like a living room chair) from Babies R Us? I found a couple for about $400 that seem nice. |
| We got a rocking/swivel recliner from buy buy baby (yes, should have gotten reclining, too, or at least the ottoman!). We used the BBB 20% off - I think it was actually only 10% on the dutailer we ended up choosing, but still helped on saving money. Great beginnings also had a good selection. I wasn't a fan of the less baby options for the nursery, but I'm sure it depends on what you find. |
