Great review on shady Grove...NOT

As someone who did not have success from SG, I still think they are the best in the area and recommend it to anyone facing IF problems. Obvisouly it was not all sunshine and roses for me at SG as we did not end up w/ a baby, but I still think they are the best in the area. I tried 4 IVF at SG times and it did not work out, but felt I got great care. Ultimetly I went to cornell and had success there.

PP did you go other places in the DC area, because I really don't think you can say SG is the best in the area. My SG doctor recommended a protocol that lead to hyperstimulation and poor embryo quality. I felt like he didn't really pay much attention to my case until I ended up in the hospital from all the fluid in my ovaries.

SMC here! Although, I didn't quite like the atmosphere and feeling like a #, SG blessed me with a daughter (now 3) & boy/girl twins (13 months). I feel that they are one of the best, also equipped with the best lab around! Best Wishes to all TTC!

I am not the PP, however I am a former SG patient who didn't have success there and still consider them the best in the area. Why? Because their statistics show that they get more people pregnant, in general, than any other practice in the area. Not every patient has success and, unfortunately, situations like yours do happen in a small number of instances - even at the best of practices. I am sorry you had to go through what you did and I totally understand your feelings about SG. I had a great experience at SG and am sad that I wasn't able to find success there.

SG here... I thought ALL of my doctors were EXTREMELY compassionate and went above and beyond for me. Dr. Greenhouse and Dr. Levens top notch and truly care about their patients. Not once did I feel pressured to go on to IVF.. I was given stats and options and went from there. My nurse was also amazing..

I felt like they didn't give my DH and I a chance from the beginning, we know we were a hard case but they made it clear from the start that if we didn't do egg donation we weren't worth their time. We are considering DE now but really don't trust SG, who is the best in DC for egg donation?

There are a number of variables to consider for donor egg. Clinic stats are on the SART website. Financial programs differ by clinic - SG does shared risk with money back, GIVF offers a frozen egg cycle that is very affordable (but egg freezing is new for them), most clinics do shared cycles, etc. The size and variety of donors in the clinic pools varies day-to-day and overall, plus some clinics offer info like adult photos, while others don't. If you are looking for specific criteria in a donor, then you may need to look more broadly to find a match. There are really a number of variables to consider, so I would suggest looking at all of the criteria in making an assessment of which clinic is right for you with regards to donor egg.

I completely agree that SG is not a warm and fuzzy place. If you want someone to hold your hand, then SG is not the place for you. However, I did not go to SG to have my hand held. I did not need it. Both my nurse and MD (Dr Chang) were wonderful, straightforward, and took the time to listen to my concerns. Though I did not see them at my monitoring appts, they were always available by phone or email! I never felt like a number. I did 6 IUIs (the last three upon my request), though it took IVF for me to get pregnant. If you want your hand held, I would recommend Dr. Gordon at Dominion. But be prepared - their waiting room is also crowded at monitoring times with little interaction among patients.

There are so many mixed reviews on area clinics, how do make a decision which one is best??

I'm another happy SG patient (Dr. Chang) and while I agree with many posters on here, I do think that my overall experience was good - although there were plenty of blips along the way. Re: IUI vs. IVF - I actually thought they encouraged me to do more less-invasive IUIs (to save money) before moving on to IVF. I felt like they were totally honest with me about my chances, and let me make decisions so as not to waste money since my insurance covered very little. We had to pay out of pocket for most of my treatment.

No single clinic is the best. You have to find the clinic and doctor that is the best fit for you - some of which you can do by making appts with the different clinics and interviewing the doctors to find who has the best approach for your IF condition and who seems to have the best personality fit. And, some of it is trial and error. You may start at one clinic and decide it's not right and move to another.

People have raved on DCUM about the first RE I saw and others detest him. Yes, he has good stats, but he also doesn't always have the best bedside manner and it turns many folks off, myself included. I ended up going to Shady Grove and never felt like it was a factory. I actually liked the fact that there were so many docs looking at things coming on the heels of my experience with the first RE who was a solo practitioner. The doc who I saw and adore at SG is one who many DCUMers can't stand. I met with one of the docs at CFA and would have considered cycling with him, given that he has much success with my particular condition, but decided to take a different path.

That's just my experience. Others have had different ones, based on the numerous posts on the topic. One shoe doesn't fit everyone the same way, as no IF clinic/doctor will fit everyone the same way.

The doctor makes a big difference in your experience. I would avoid Nair--condescending, not knowledgeable, and when I saw her for my first IUI she hadn't even read my chart at the first monitoring appointment. She also saw a lead on day 3 (12 mm), and let my cycle go forward even though I asked--I was a fertility newbie then, and that wasted thousands of dollars.

Widra is good and people seem to like Chang and Stillman.

PP - I agree on Nair. She is rough and crude in her practice. Every exam with her and iui with her has been painful when it never has been with the other docs. When she was on crutches she put the gloves on then used her crutches and then decided to do the ultrasound. Gross. When I said something she played it off. Sorry that's just amateur hour. That's the main trouble with SG, you can't get away from the rotations of the day. There are lots of other great docs there though and thankfully getting Nair is infrequent.

Reading this thread jus confirms how individual every woman's experience is going to be. I was at CFA and felt like I could barely tolerate the admin screw ups, unreturned phone calls, lack of info from nurses (some of critical on how to stim) etc. My husband and I agreed that if IVF failed we would switch to Shady Grove and two other couple specifically recommend Dr Nair to us. Fortunately, IVF worked for us so no switching. I have found that people who get pregnant at any clinic are going to obviously rate them higher. As for people talking to me in the waiting room, yikes I would hate that. Its stressful enough without making small talk. (But I also went to one fertility support group and hated it so much I never went back...)

Totally disagree on PPs about Dr. Nair. We had a wonderful experience with her over many months; she was gentle and pleasant during every exam (and she made a point to do my monitoring/ ultrasounds when she saw me on the schedule if she was in the office.) We had success. Very early, but it's still success for now.
