please remind me to take the high road

Anonymous
People get annoyed when they are forced to be spectators of a situation that ends up making them feel uncomfortable or put in the middle. Don't equate yourself with this woman by making this messier. Take the high road, stay silent. The woman who sent the message will certainly try to do some damage control, with you or with the group as a whole. Just sit tight and let this play out. If you need to step in and set the record straight at some point, you still can.

OP, you are on the right track--aka the High Road. It's hard not to respond and defend yourself or at least tell your side of the story, but I agree with the PPs who say that even if you're in the right, you'll still look better if you just don't respond at all. I hope that the email sender realizes her mistake and apologizes but I wouldn't count on that and it's not relevant in your own personal decision not to engage in public crap. Sorry this happened to you. I'd be upset. I like the idea of emailing yourself a response--of course, just make sure not to send it to the wrong person!

OP here. Thanks for all the encouragement! I've managed to hold my tongue for this long, and feel better & better about the whole situation. It was such a big help to write it down like this and get support from others.

type your reply out here so we can enjoy your scathing put down, then don't actually reply.

This happens to me at work all the time- particularly with attorneys for some reason. I think some of them take sadistic pleasure in being D***s on email chains with a lot of recipients. (No offense to non-sadistic attorneys- most that I know fall in this category.)

I usually don't directly address. I find "engaging" in nonsense (if its truly nonsense and not a legitimate quibble) just fuels the fire. I'll typically call them or email them directly and handle at source. No need in giving the crowd Act II of the show if it is a hot mess to begin with...

Delete it. It helps take away some of the temptation.
