The admin already is unable to do the work students and families need them to do so giving them one more thing to do seems dumb.
Does anyone know the supposedly hurtful things that were published that motivated this? |
Are you kidding? Principals are going to feel pressure from central not to approve anything that is critical of central office or that portrays MCPS in a negative light |
Can you explain? What happened in FCPS? |
Correct. |
| Pathetic. |
And principals are going to feel pressure to obey the law. |
Why have a student newspaper if no one is going to read it? |
|
It’s pretty awesome that MCPS is going to suppress student publications. What are they afraid of?
|
+1 previous PP, could you fill us in on what FCPS is doing? |
WTH MCPS? All the stuff you don't get around to doing -- HVAC repairs on a timely basis so schools don't have to shut down for the day, or longer; water fountain replacements; externally developed and vetted curriculum; differentiated education based on ability and level of English proficiency in high school; and the list goes on and on. But hey, Taylor and company have time to come up with a squeeze move to repress student journalist (and scared principals will repress news). Please fire this guy already. |
Oh it is bad. |
| Thanks for sharing this article. I had no idea. My youngest just graduated after serving as a managing editor. He didn’t mention this to me which is surprising as he talks a lot about censorship. I hope this doesn’t discourage kids from pursuing journalism. My sons both benefited greatly from serving on the school paper. |
| Great opportunity for kids to openly oppose MCPS and then write about it for their college applications. I fought the law! |
Actually, Taylor fought the law and he will lose.Read the Bethesda Magazine article. This guy is more and more like Trump. |
| I’m not sure if anyone remembers but a similar situation happened around 10 years ago at Jackson Reed HS in DC when it was called Wilson. Their newly appointed principal at the time, Kim Martin, came up with a rule that all articles had to be approved by her before publication. The student newspaper rebutted and it became a huge deal. It was also a story in the post and Kojo Namdi had the student journalists on his show. Eventually the principal backed down. But press freedom was a much bigger issue then compared to how much journalism has been decimated these days |
