Visiting Pitt-Where to stay?

Agree. Oaklander is very nice but not worth the price. Especially if the purpose of the trip is to see schools - a bed is a bed and the other places suggested are fine for a fraction of the price. Save your money for a sandwich at Primanti's.

We stayed at a Marriott by the baseball stadium so we could walk to the game.

The Renaissance across from the baseball stadium is awesome - I went to a great wedding there years ago. It isn't far from the schools - maybe 3-4 miles? And if you go at the same time as the Pirates are in town, definitely go to a game - gorgeous stadium and you can usually get cheap tickets.
