Hitting parked cars

But don’t you ever park anywhere other than your house? One of the incidents occurred in a parking garage

You said while parked on the street.

Also, use valet when out.

You’re right, i did misspeak originally. One incident was on the street, the other in the garage.

We don’t have valet at work?

Agree! I just didn’t notice before how common it is! If you look at cars (just glancing around while at an intersection), it is astounding how many cars have clearly had this kind of damage.

I mean, it’s just a car, I’m not hysterical about it, but I am appalled that people do this.

Actually yes, i do expect a note - even if i chose not to pursue a repair. It is simply the right thing to do if you damage someone’s property.

Is your street very narrow? Are you in the city? I ask because our suburban neighborhood doesn’t have a recurring problem with cars being hit.

We are in the city, but a very residential section. Streets are not particularly narrow. Do drive downtown (to garage) for work a few days a week.

It happened to me twice with a pretty new car. My car was parked and fortunately I was still in it when the other cars hit me. They were trying to parallel park in front of me and pulled in too quickly, swiping the front corner of my car. No idea whether they would have left a note had I not been there. I park elsewhere now.

I've had it happen in parking lots too. Definitely quite frustrating.

I know some people are taught to parallel park with the "bump and go" method which involves bumping the cars in front of/behind them.

People are actually taught to bump the other car? No wonder there are so many poor drivers now.

I had my parked car hit one time, they knocked off the mirror and damaged the driver side. It happened overnight, no note. I do have a driveway but had moved my car out for some reason or other and forgot to move it back. It really sucked, and reinforced my belief in taking responsibility for damage you cause.

I dinged my neighbors car once-left a note and paid the $50 it cost him to get the scrape buffed out. My kid once slammed our car door into the car next to us-the driver was in it and that one ended up going through insurance. It was a bad scratch, so I would have left a note.

I have definitely let it go in instances where there’s tiny door or bumper contact, but anything further than that I own up to.

People who back into spaces are the worst for hitting cars. Yet they keep trying to back in spaces.

This. Do you live in the city? Are you talking about a bumper bump or actual damage like scrapes on a bumper? Are you parellel parking? I see a huge number of cars who seem to hit poles in parking garages. People can't drive.

I park far away when I can.

I would leave a note. But my car is old and worn so if someone scraped it a little bit I probably wouldn't notice.

I wonder if this issue is exacerbated by the sheer amount of deliveries people receive nowadays. That and the proliferation of Ubers/Lyfts.

There are just so many cars pulling over and people getting in and out constantly. Must up the odds of cars getting dinged

I lived my formative years in Paris, and this is actually what you need to do for street parking. Otherwise you literally cannot get out of your spot.

You're wrong. Backing into perpendicular spaces is much safer, especially now that most cars have backup cameras: you're backing into a space where nothing is moving. Then you pull out into the active area with full visibility. I've never seen someone hit another car doing this, but I've seen plenty of people backing out without being able to see what's coming and colliding with another vehicle.

OP I live on a narrow street in a dense part of the city, with parking on both sides, and I see these little scrapes happen pretty often. Two cars can pass each other, but they have to be careful. A car going too fast will try to move over for a car going the opposite direction, or to get around an uber or delivery vehicle just stopped in the middle of the street (a massive peeve for another thread), and scuff a parked car. No one ever stops to leave a note.

This is why I spend the minimum possible on a safe, reliable car. I live in the city. It's a foregone conclusion that it's going to get dinged.

Yes, absolutely. The worst offenders are delivery drivers/ rideshare drivers, and others trying to maneuver around their randomly stopped cars. I see it happen often, and there's almost always a delivery or rideshare vehicle involved.
