i think it depends on the school/AAP versus gened. my daughter took 4 SOLs this year. she got perfect on 2 of them. and she got perfect on her ones in previous years. in AAP classes most kids get pass advanced. some kids also get easier questions than others. i work in fcps and can see the SOL breakdowns of questions right/wrong and the level of difficulty. some kids get easier tests than others. i wouldn’t read too much into a perfect score. not once had a teacher even acknowledged my kids 600s |
Strong chance at MIT. Just make sure you keep a copy of the score and include it in the MIT app. |

My kid is transferring to our local public high school in August. They did Catholic K-8. I have a few questions regarding the SOLs:
1. What is the benefit of getting a top SOL score? 2. What happens if they don’t pass the exam? 3. How difficult are these exams? 4. How stressed out are students, teachers and parents regarding the SOLs? |
| In my kids circle, it is very common. Nothing bragworthy. |
1. What is the benefit of getting a top SOL score? Nothing 2. What happens if they don’t pass the exam? They do not get a verified credit towards graduation. If they only fail by a little bit, they will be remediated and get a second attempt to pass. If they fail again, they'll get intensive supports to take it the next year, and/or they'll take the SOL for the next course in sequence and hope to pass that 3. How difficult are these exams? They are the bare minimum to show competency. Not a big deal for a diligent student who can retain information beyond the current unit. Difficult if your teacher is out for half the year and you have a mish mash of subs, or if the content isn't taught at a pace to get through the curriculum before the test. 4. How stressed out are students, teachers and parents regarding the SOLs? Depends on the school. Title 1/low income schools stress a lot because accreditation is at risk if kids (and beyond that, specific subgroups) don't pass at proper rates. At wealthier schools, they are basically just a nuisance. |

4th graders do history SOL?
|
Not at most schools. The state offers a PBL they can do in place of an SOL and almost all schools have gone that route. |
| It means your kid can focus and is good at test taking. |
Mine also got two out of four 600s and has one previous 600. Does it matter if the teacher says anything? Teachers are focused on other things - I am focused on remediation of my students that didn't pass. |
no it doesn’t matter if teachers say anything. i meant that in i wouldn’t make a big deal out of 600s because teachers and schools don’t even acknowledge it. my kids are in AAP. no one is failing/needing remediation so my kid’s teachers aren’t focused on that. |
There are kids in aap who need remediation |
| Since 6th grade, my son has consistently scored around 600 on the math SOL. He is in high school |
Virginia Studies (Social Studies), yes. |
