what’s normal social interaction between boys + girls in 5th?

My son has a mix of friends who are boys and girls. The girls are school friends, the boys get together outside of school. They all chat while they play computer games together. He doesn't have a phone so can't text but uses messenger with them sometimes.

My kid also has friends that are girls and boys. It’s refreshing to see and totally ok. They should play with everyone; it fosters their social skills.

Yeah, giving the kids ipads/phones/etc is far more of a problem than anything else.

From what I've seen -- note that I'm in a fairly conservative, low-tech milieu, so YMMV -- there are very few pseudo-romantic relationships in 5th, though it does happen. Boys and girls will play together at school, but generally in group games, or circumstantially, in neighborhoods. Arranged playdates are exceedingly uncommon between boys and girls in 5th, unless the girl is a 1950s-style tomboy. (I have a son in 5th with a good female friend who matches this description, and they get together pretty often to hunt toads.) The majority of interests have diverged, though. Whole class birthday parties happen every so often, and people of the opposite sex show up, but usually not many of them.

No watches? How do you keep track of them when they ride bikes or walk around the neighborhood ? We have a watch and they text friends. It’s not a big deal in my opinion. There’s no internet or games on his. It’s just to text friends or us. What is the concern w this?
