Do you allow your son or daughter to “text” with the opposite sex on their ipad or iphone?
Do you monitor it or have you noticed this going on? I have an incoming 5th grader |
|
Yes I have allowed my DD now 13 to message any friend regardless of gender. She didn’t have phone until 6th but used facebook messenger during 5th grade.
Why wouldn’t you let a 10 yo communicate with either gender? This is bizarre. |

| Girls are developing a romantic fondness for boys but it's one sided. Boys at the same age are, imo, crude, uncivilized creatures. Girls most likely will be repulsed by most talk from the boys. I think for either, putting any communication in writing is not a good idea. Whatever they say, or whatever they send, pictures or words may be used for teasing. |
Girls that age often pretend to be interested when they are not, because they see other girls acting interested and they want to fit in. |
| I allow it but it never happens outside of group texts. 5th graders are still very gender segregated. |
Same here. |
| Why don’t any of you guys encourage your kids to not only have same gender friends? Why would it be a bad thing to have a friend that is a boy in 5th grade? |
| Same gender friendships starting to pop up in 6th grade. But it's still pretty much "boys are gross." |
| in 5th grade they should not to texting anyone at all |
| The boy girl texting didn’t start until 7th grade us. Even then, it was pretty limited. |
My 10/11 year old was sexually harassed in 5th grade with both touching and words. My daughter never told me. Her close friend told her mother who called the school. I had asked the school to address these issues with the girls because it would only be getting worse in middle school. The school said it was the end of the school year and they would be focusing on the boy’s issues and don’t worry, he won’t be going to the middle school. |
| I have boy/girl twins that are now teenagers. This concern has never crossed my mind. |
| ^^who^^ are now teenagers. |
