Marshall high, college results/uva vs other FCPS— theories?

Most kids I know who placed into Marshall for IB, went to slacs.

I feel like students who post on Insta do that for their parents. If you look at their actual IG, there are either no pics whatsoever or 1 or 2. So I wouldn't trust the numbers on Insta.

FWIW, my Marshall student graduated last year and did not post. He is at Ole Miss.

Disagree. Students who post their post-graduation plans on the student-sponsored Instagram pages do so primarily in response to encouragement from other students, not their parents. It varies by school and by year.

That said, the IG is a subset of kids that report. Looking at Marshall's Naviance, there's a pretty clear line at a WGPA of 4.40 where it's almost all green checks for UVA.

My friend at another IB school feels the exact opposite- that IB made her kid stand out (kid went TO). I guess we'll never know!

UVA is not a good deal so if cost is a factor, kids might be opting for merit elsewhere.

UVA is a great deal. What better deal are you finding in VA?

At W&L IB is a boost for UVA. I just counted and they have 29 going from this year's class who have posted.

NP but my senior didn’t apply to any schools in VA and his OOS school ended up costing less than UVA. He had no interest in applying there. It’s not a good fit for everyone.

It’s not true, but some feel like the VA schools will be a continuation of HS and this area. He didn’t even want to visit them and only looked OOS.

Not all the kids post their college results on the IG pages.

Glancing at a few fcps high school's pages, it seems thatt the pages show maybe 1/2 or less of the kids posting, broken down to mostly girls posting, 60-70% girls and 30-40% boys within the posts.

I could've written the same thing. My DS is graduating from Marshall and did not want to go to any DMV schools.

Marshall was closed to pupil placements for quite a few years due to higher enrollment. It looks like they are just starting to take more pupil placements again, although they are also seeing a lot of kids go to Madison for AP.

I’m not finding a lot of SLACs on the GCM Class of 2026 Instagram page (and none that would be considered a top SLAC), but I could imagine some well-to-do family at Langley sending their kid to Marshall for IB also sending them to a SLAC.

If you look at the Instagram pages the percentage of Marshall kids staying in-state is higher than at some nearby schools. It’s just that the more common state schools are VT, JMU, VCU, and GMU rather than UVA.

Many privates will give merit to bring costs below UVA. Not everyone is chasing UVA name recognition.

I’m the first poster and my kid didn’t post on instagram. Many have no interest in that.

Me thinks you have way too much time on your hands lady. Get a life. Really. WTF. They should make these groups just for students so the creepers stay out.
