When I was a student at the University of Michigan, I always brought my violin with me whenever I traveled back to the DMV during holidays, winter break, spring break, and summer break. People often asked whether I could actually play the violin—shocking I know—and one time I even played bach on air at the airport while waiting for my flight. One person was so impressed that he asked me to teach his kids violin. His wife was an executive at The Carlyle Group, and she offered me an internship after my sophomore & junior year. I later got a full-time job there after graduation. I didn’t have to flight in first class. People will extend a hand to help you if you have something valuable to offer.

If this is a real post, I doubt the feeling is mutual. The people “you want to be around” can sniff your type out in a hot second.

My son got an internship when he worked as a caddy at a country club. He knew nothing about golf but the other caddies were always late and calling in sick. He admitted to a golfer that he knew next to nothing about golf and the guy laughed and said he actually hated golf.

He asked for my son to caddy for him again and then my son went through the interview process at his company and months later, was offered an internship. Not only did he not pay a dime for access to these rich guys, he was paid and earned great tips.

The moral is that you need to be more creative than opting for the upgrade.
