Summary -- no starting early, but ending early. Adding in November 9th, day before Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve. Setting 4/22 (Passover) and 5/17 (Eid) as potential makeups along with June 11 - June 17.

Thank GOD we're not starting early.

Ridiculous that he's holding onto a transition day. Also, Thanksgiving is one of the most celebrated holidays in the country. It is the most traveled and a half day before Thanksgiving is makes no sense. It's been great being off the day before and the idea of resuming a half day really sucks. It is pointless.

Compared to his persistence on the ridiculous regional model, I'm perfect to live with one transition day per year.

A transition day is not necessary. It takes away from a school day .

Was it all a fake-out? If this had been the original recommendation there probably would have been a lot of grumbling about day before Thanksgiving or maybe something else.

Was the 1st recommendation just to make us see this as vastly superior, or am I giving him too much credit?

They should stop surveying too. They don't listen to any feedback either way. But this was just the way to make the day before Thanksgiving and the 23rd half days like you said.

Who cares what his motivation was. The fact he proposed moving up the start of school with such little notice is indicative of his complete and total lack of respect for families and staff. I'm sure he thought he was being clever in some way. What a f-ing a-hole.

Agreed.

I don't get this. The regional model is still happening. The transition day is still happening. One has nothing to do with the other. Both are costly and offer little benefit.

PP and I agree. Even though he backed down, proposing something so disruptive at all is really disrespectful of families and teachers.

It probably was, but it was an incredibly insulting and costly choice to do so. Even threatening a change like that tells staff and families that MCPS cannot be trusted to hold to their promises on scheduling and don't care about teachers having a proper summer break. It makes them less desirable as a district and for those who have options, they are more likely to leave. And everyone loses as a result.

This says December 23rd, which is not Christmas Eve…

Much better than the alternative, but Transition Day should have been the first to go.

Could it make a difference if everyone wrote to the Board now to ask them to give back the day before Thanksgiving while ditching Transition Day?

I'll try. I was hoping Transition Day would go. I understand it's helpful, but it is really not necessary. The students have been fine without it for many years.
