+1. Do you not know about downdraft, OP?

I can confirm many do not have downdraft. And downdraft isn’t as effective as something above it to capture the smoke and fumes.

Are you OP? How can you confirm this? Is this a troll post?

If you only look at high end houses you might not be aware, but where I live quickie cosmetic flips of old houses are the norm. The stove has a microwave overhead with a fan and a filter. The fan doesn’t actually send the air anywhere but the filter is supposed to catch grease particles.
The flippers are not about to install a vent, downdraft or otherwise, and the old people who lived there for decades made do with opening a window.

Learned quickly that ours does not vent.
Not in our budget to reconfigure that.

Do you have a window in the kitchen? You can put something like this in there -- it has an exhaust setting: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Vornado-25-in-4-Speed-Indoor-Ice-White-Window-Fan-with-Remote/5014757843

No. It was the back of the house and would have had a window but previous owners did a large addition.

We cannot hook our up due to a stud in the way. We have induction and rarely need it.

I have a microwave over the stove with a fan that vents to the outside. We have a very small kitchen, so that is the only place we can install a microwave. My contractor recommended and put in the outside venting when we renovated our kitchen.

No such thing it's physics

It's a way for builders and renovators to cheap out and pocket the money

I would never buy a house without proper vent hood to the outside with makeup air. I will assume that the rest of the house is cut corners and awful if they cheaper out on the kitchen

Just change your cooking and eating habits. Nobody needs to be frying food in oils and grease.
